Spartans Conquered By Moors

Matt Jones was under the Moor rush all night

(Alhambra) The Alhambra Moors reeled off 27 straight first half points to take a 27-7 lead and then cruised to a 34-14 win over the visiting La Canada Spartans Friday night at Moor Field.

The Spartans got on the board first on their third play from scrimmage. Quarterback Matt Jones appeared to hand the ball off to running back Kyle Herron. It looked like Herron was stopped for a minimal gain and the next thing most of the attending crowd saw was Jones racing down the middle of the field for a 56-yard touchdown. The point after was good and La Canada let 7-0 before any of the seats were warm.

“We weren’t expecting the Veer Option they really didn’t run that last year. When we got a hold of the scrimmage tape, we really only had about two days to prepare for it”commented Moor Head Coach Lou Torres.

The Moor defense made the right adjustments and held the Spartans scoreless for the remainder of the first half

After a short punt left Alhambra in business at the La Canada 26, Josh Mendoza and the offense took over and marched five plays to paydirt. Mendoza called his own number and wedged his way in for the score behind a great push from the bubbas up front.

Ezra Broadus en route to one of his two scores

A fumble by La Canada’s Jones set the Moors up in Spartan territory again this time at the 44. Alhambra only needed one play this time as Ezra Broadus found a seem and was gone to glory.. The point after failed but Alhambra had extended its lead to 20-7.

The first half scoring barrage was capped by a 25-yard strike from Mendoza to Demetrius Russell.

Neither team managed to put any points on the board in the third period and it wasn’t until 2:16 left in the game that the Moors broke the second half scoring drought.

A strange call by the officials gave the ball first and goal at the Spartan four yard line. Three plays later Mendoza powered his way across he goal line for his second score of he evening.

“Offensively we still have some work to do. We should have put up a couple more (touchdowns) up there so we have some work to do. Defensively we played great across our line and linebackers” Coach Torres stated after the game.
