La Mirada Holds Off CV

(La Mirada)- Crescenta Valley’s Zac Wilkerson threw two first quarter touchdown passes and later ran for two more, but the Falcons fell at La Mirada 35-30 on Friday night in the first round of the CIF playoffs.

Wilkerson’s scoring tosses were both to Nick Ruiz, the first from 11-yards the second from 23.

The Falcons start was especially troubling for the Matadores after last season ended at home when Muir defeated them in the first round thanks to Kevon Seymour’s memorable evening running “The Wildcat” six times for four scores.

This time Mike Moschetti’s team responded quickly. Gerry Myers went 28-yards to Dallis Shipp at the end of the first quarter. He then went 16-yards to Shipp again at the 7:31 mark of the second quarter.

Four minutes later Johnny Hills ran 24-yards to give La Mirada a 21-14 lead at the break.

In the third CV’s Pavle Atanackovic drilled a 21-yard field goal to narrow the margin down to four, but Myers and hooked up moments later from 5-yards to push the lead back up to 28-17.

Undeterred Wilkerson took his team back down the field and scored on a 24-yard run.

The Matadores responded on their first play of the next drive when Hills went 80-yards to the house and a 35-24 lead.

Wilkerson was able to engineer a final drive and scored on a 1-yard run with 1:28 to play but it wouldn’t be enough.
