Mustangs too Fast for Chiefs

By Johnathan Saller

(Santa Fe Springs)– The Muir Mustangs displayed speed on offense and toughness on defense in a 39-7 drubbing over the host Santa Fe Chiefs at Pioneer High School Friday night.

Joshua Muema-washington was on point with the passing game (11-17-214 yards) throwing for four touchdowns of 27, 69, 12 and 37-yards. Having seen limited action since a car accident after the Hoover game on 10/14 it was a welcome presence for the Mustangs.

“We’ll go as far as Josh takes us. Josh is our quarterback. With him, we have a good shot at any game. Tonight, well, he was fantastic,” Muir head coach David Mitchell said.

From the outset it was clear that the Mustangs had the better athletes on the field. Muema-washington found receiver Lamarr McDaniels for Muir’s first score going 27-yards on a pass play where McDaniels simply burned the Chiefs secondary.

Santa Fe elected to punt on fourth and long on its ensuing drive. Kevon Seymour fielded the punt with the gunner in his face and did an absolutely ridiculous spin-move to shake him, Seymour then burst up the field juking another defender and cut across the field breaking a third and then a fourth tackle on his way to an electric 60-yard punt return for the score.

Midway through the second quarter the Mustangs opened up another possession at its own 31. Muema-washington fired a pass into coverage for Seymour. Seymour caught it in stride, juked both defenders and jetted to the endzone putting Muir up 18-0.

Santa Fe answered right back and was able to score on a long touchdown of its own when sophomore quarterback Justin Retiz found Joey Davis for a 67-yard score tightening it up at 18-7.

That was as close as the Chiefs would get as the Mustangs’ offense continued to display its team speed. The defense stifled Santa Fe forcing five turnovers; two interceptions, two fumbles and a muffed punt.

Seymour finished with two scores through the air in addition to his punt return gaining over 150 all-purpose yards.

Next week Muir (7-4) will face Diamond Ranch (6-5).
