Covina Tournament: Damien, Rowland Advance to Final

(Covina) – Damien and Rowland both survived close calls to advance to the finals of the Covina Tournament Friday night. Damien was down by one and at the half and was tied at the end of three before outscoring Cal 20-15 in the final quarter to get the five point win.

Rowland and Covina battled each other into the fourth quarter before Rowland finally prevailed. The Raiders hit 10 of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter to secure a four point victory.

Rowland had three players in double figures and the Raiders put up 20 in the fourth quarter to hold off Covina 61-57. Chris Arzadon had 18 to lead the Raiders including six in the final frame. Joseph Dionisio had 14 and Jacky Tu added 13 with five of those coming in the fourth.

Dionisio hit three of four free throws in the fourth quarter and Arzadon (2 for 2), Tu (2 for 2) and Jesus Hernandez (3 for 3) were all perfect from the stripe in the fourth. Rowland was up 41-40 after three before outscoring the Colts 20-16 in the last quarter.

Mike Peters, as he has been all year, was the go to guy for Covina. The senior guard scored 24 points with eight of those coming in the fourth quarter. Peters hit three three pointers along the way. Matt Hicks scored 12, Blythe Curry tossed in 10 and Elias Hernandez chipped in nine.

The Colts were in the hunt the entire way and were tied  at 53 with 1:20 left in the contest. Tu hit a three pointer for Rowland but Hicks came right back with a deuce down low at the other end. Tu followed with a pair of freee throws to give Rowland a 58-55 lead. After a time out, Peters missed a three but the the Colts maintained possession and Curry scored on a lay up to cut the lead to one. Dionisio hit two free throws, and after Peters missed a long three, he hit another one to seal the victory.

Rowland will face Damien Saturday night.

Damien 59 California 54

Jeremy Hemsley scored 14 second half points and a game high 23 to lead Damien to a 59-54 win over Cal. The Condors led 13-7 after one quarter and still held on to a one point advantage at 22-21 at the break but the Spartans came back with a 38 point second half to get the win.

Jared Dizon scored 11 for Damien including a pair of long range bombs. Dizon and Hemsley combined for 13 of the 20 fourth quarter points.

Andrew Garber tossed in 14 for Cal including seven in the first quarter and Carlos Legaspy added ten. Matt Lambrecht hit five of seven free throws in the fourth quarter and finished with 11 overall.

The Spartans picked up steam as the game went along. They started with just seven points in the first quarter but racked up 20 in the fourth to subdue the Condors.
