Red Devils Pull a Fast One, 28-10

(Covina) – Pomona was faster on offense, quicker on defense and ultimately beat Northview to the finish line 28-10 Thursday night at Covina District Field.

Northview was unable to run wide on Pomona who always seemed to get there first. The Vikes didn’t get the passing attack working either against an athletic, Pomona secondary.

“When you have those types of guys, they do those types of things,” said first year Pomona Coach John Brown. “Athletes make plays. That’s what they do.”

Jamal Overton was the first one to make a big play for Pomona. He broke off a 51 yard run down to the two yard line in the first quarter on the Devils’ second drive of the game. From there Overton scooted over for the touchdown for a 7-0 lead.

Northview generated a drive on the following series as quarterback Martin Arredondo capped a long march with a one yard run.

The Vikings made a huge mistake on their next series and Pomona immediately cashed in. Arredondo threw a pass not only behind the receiver but behind the scrimmage line as well. Derrick Burton fell on the loose ball at the Northview 25. Two plays later, Taj Teague hauled in a 22 yard pass from Darrian Lewis to put Pomona up by seven at the half.

The Red Devils took control in the third quarter. Seemingly buried at his own 15 on third and forever, Lewis made another play. He danced out of trouble and fired a strike to David Villa over the middle. Villa broke to the outside, found some daylight and 85 yards later he was racing into the endzone.

Charles Vergara booted a 25 yard field goal later to get Northview back to within 11, but Pomona landed the knockout punch on the next series.

Dheris Woods returned the kickoff 36 yards back to the Northview 35. On the next play Teague got loose for a 33 yard run down the two. The junior then finished it himself with a two yard run.

Teague, whose brother Titus is a redshirt freshman at Louisville, is already getting looks by Division One schools as a defensive back. Teague had over 50 yards rushing and a touchdown and also had the touchdown receiving.

Lewis completed just two passes on the night and both went for touchdowns. Lewis is heading to Eastern Michigan next fall.

“He’s dynamic and he’s athletic. That’s why he’s going to college next year,” Brown said.

Kamaron Germany rushed for over 100 yards for the Vikings but after that the offense sputtered.

Pomona improved to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the Valle Vista League with the win. Northview fell to 0-1 and 1-5.
