(Azusa Pacific University) – The Black squad rallied to beat Brick 21-20 Saturday in the annual Azusa Pacific Spring scrimmage.
Andrew Elffers led the comeback from a 20-6 deficit throwing a pair of touchdown passes. He also ran in the conversion for the 21-20 win late in the contest. Nick Owens played quarterback for the Brick squad and also threw a couple of TD strikes.
The scrimmage is a chance for APU players to get their first test to compete in full helmet and pads. It’s also an opportunity for the alumni and fans to see a glimpse of the upcoming team. Former APU star Luke Marquardt was one of the former palyers on hand to check out the team. Marquardt is trying to make the team with the San Francisco 49ers.
“It’s all about having fun out here today. It’s just good to be out here. It’s football season,” said Azusa Pacific Coach Victor Santa Cruz.
For former Maranatha quarterback Elffers he’s keeps on working to improve every day.
“I’m just trying to get better as a quarterback,” Elffers said. “Better on reads, throws, everything.”
