Adrian Medrano Resigns at Bonita. ER next?

By Tim Peterson

(La Verne) – Adrian Medrano stepped down as the head coach at Bonita Wednesday the school confirmed. Medrano is expected to be named the head coach at El Rancho by the end of the week.

Bonita sent out an e mail Wednesday to over 240 Athletic Directors in Southern California stating in part that there is an opening for the Head Varsity Football Coach position and the job will be flown on Edjoin.org within the next few days. The rest of the e mail talked about the attributes of the Bonita program and the La Verne community.

Medrano applied for the head coaching job at El Rancho, and according to sources was one of two finalists for the position as of Tuesday. He then resigned Wednesday fueling speculation that his hiring at ER is imminent.

Medrano took over for Eric Podley after the 2011 season. He was 27-18 overall in four years and 2-3 in the post season. The Bearcats went to the Central Division semi finals in 2014 before losing to Los Altos. Last year Bonita was 8-3 overall and fell in the first round to Don Lugo.

Roddy Hiatt, who took over for Vinny Lopez, resigned at El Rancho last year after just one season.

FBfan has helped me understand that good coaches such as Medrano naturally look for other jobs AFTER they have resigned from comfortable positions such as the Bonita gig. It’s possible we have another Einstein on our hands.

With ER dragging their feet, Medrano is interviewing for Corona Roosevelt and could be named their coch. This would put him against his old coching colleague and college teammate Chuck Chatain. Roosevelt would love to have him because their a team with untapped talent that hasnt done well.

You are right about being careful what you wish for. Podley is a fine man and coach but…. in his 9 years before he wooed Medrano away from San Dimas as their DC to Bonita he made the playoffs only twice and lost both. Medrano arrived in 2009 and in Podleys final 3 years Bonita had great success. In the 2010 run to the final Podley was very ill all season missing often and in a walker due to a very serious back infection which he commented made him re-evaluate his life. Medrano carried the water for Podley that season as he will readily admit. Call Medrano dis-liked and Podley liked by the La Verne community if you will, no argument here because I don’t know. But since Medrano has been there, Bonita football has prospered. An aberration, an accident, a coincidence? ER does not think so. Yeah YOU better be careful what you wish for.

Quitting on a coach says more about the players and their parents, than the coach. Medrano won’t have that problem at El Rancho.

Are you saying the kids at Bonita purposely lost to Don Lugo because they did not like their coach and wanted Podley back? Wow! Were you one of the players that threw the game Jonas?

El Rancho be careful what you ask for. The Bohi kids quit on Medrano before the Don Lugo game. Players wanted the season to finish and lost to Don Lugo, the same team that Pomona beat during the season. In years pasted with Podley as HC Don Lugo would not have been a bump in the road to second round of the playoffs.

BG….instead of worrying about your black and blue game, you should worry about keeping your players. Word is some of your players are shopping around.

@Don. There is no need to wait till Feb. 2 to name the coach. The board can meet at any time and ok it. Not a big deal. But the ER board can make it more of a circus and take public comments which could make any poor coach run for cover.Small town politics. Admins and politicos are always jealous of the football coaches and the press they get so they often make it very difficult for them to get hired and fire them easy. See Oliva, Beltran, Medrano,Aguilar Etc. Anyone see a pattern here? Anything can happen.

First thoughts: I don’t know why Bonita was in such an all fired hurry to push coach out the door. Just because he showed some interest in is old alma mater? Seems that Dub could have waited one second to see how this played out before losing a coach that will be tough to replace. The 49ers did the same thing to Harbaugh and now look at them. The laughing stock of the NFL Second: No offense to the two coaches you mentioned but everyone that knows Bonita football understands that Medina has been the beating heart of that team for many years and that he is the quiet brains behind the curtain. He and Aguilar in whatever title would be the replacements that might keep Bonita football ticking.
