1. The LA Kings fall to the San Jose Sharks 2-1 to open the 2016-’17 NHL season.

2. The San Francisco 49ers work out a restructured deal with Colin Kaepernick which turns it into a two-year deal with a player option for the second year.

3. The Orlando Predators of the Arena Football League announced Wednesday that they are suspending operations effective immediately.

4. Rich Hill announced that he will be the starter for the Dodgers in Game 5 of the NLDS today in Washington DC against the Nationals. The Dodgers have not confirmed the announcement. Max Scherzer will get the nod for the Nationals.

5. LA Rams cornerback Trumaine Johnson will miss Sunday’s game vs. the Detroit Lions due to a high ankle injury suffered last week against Buffalo.

6. LA Clippers forward Paul Pierce confirmed Wednesday that he will sign a one-day contract with the Boston Celtics before retiring after the 2016-’17 season.

7. “She may be a Raiders fan but she’s seen all of James Caan’s movies, so let the romance begin.” – MVS Commenter “Silver & Black” on Tim Peterson’s column “The Peterson Principle.”

8. The Atlanta Braves hired Brian Snitker as their manager. Snitker took over as interim manager on May 17 when Fredi Gonzalez was fired.

9. Happy Birthday to Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice who turns 54 today.
