Mid Valley Writers Top 20

We got a little more clarity after Zero Week. Five of the teams in the Top 10 lost their openers however their opponents were anything but cupcakes. Here we go into Week One. Let the arguments begin.

1. Cathedral (1-0) – Phantoms clean up on Santa Fe, jump to the top spot.

2. Sierra Canyon (0-1)  – Trailblazers can’t contend with Westlake; tough schedule early.

3. Charter Oak (1-0) – Chargers show off the weapons in rout of Northview.

4. Crescenta Valley (1-0) – Falcons travel to Florida to get an opening victory.

5. St. Francis (0-0) – Golden Knights open at home Thursday against Mira Costa.

6. La Mirada (0-1) – Loss to Orange Lutheran was ugly; well see how Mats bounce back.

7. Buena Park (1-0) – Not the same team in win over Pasadena.

8. San Dimas (1-0) – Saints good, not great, in Smudge Pot.

9. Glendora (1-0) – Tartans move up after making quick work of Kaiser.

10. Downey (0-1) – Ok, Santa Margarita is good but 56-0?

11. Arroyo (1-0) – Ernesto Camacho and the offense look good in opener.

12. Los Altos (1-0) – The Hector Spathias era begins with a victory.

13. La Serna (0-1) – La Serna can’t deal with La Costa.

14. Northview (0-1) – Will be interesting to see how Vikings respond.

15. Muir (1-0) – Mustangs saying they’re for real.

16. West Covina (0-1) – Does Colony need to be on the schedule next year?

17. Schurr (1-0) – Not pretty for Spartans, but it’s a W.

18. Montebello (0-1) – Oilers lose a shootout with Garfield.

19. Burbank (1-0) – Did everybody overlook the Bulldogs?

20. Arcadia (1-0) – Nice win over La Salle; Cathedral this week.

Bud you completely missed the point of my argument by taking what I said out of context. I implied that they can “play” as an compete or beat most schools in the country besides the few elite. You just don’t see it because of the vast talent in so cal. The ignorance amazes me

    Oiler ,
Amat is a great program but the fan ruin everything. Amat fans think the are a top rated program. If you look outside the valley they scratch the top 30 maybe.

I agree 100% with your post! You can change the school to”Arroyo” and I would agree with that, too.

    Stupid people?

How can you knock Amat for being good? Those are just facts….They have been very good for a very long time. Any coach would love to be in that situation. I don’t see the logic behind some of these comments. At the end of the day they have a powerful program. Get over it if you don’t like it. Amazing that some people just don’t get the hard work that was put into that program.. I know it didn’t happen over night.
We should applaud success not knock it…

Keppel can play anybody in nation. Doesn’t mean it we be competitive. Amat is a big fish in a small pond. And a shrimp in the ocean!

The reality is we live in socal and that division 2 and 3 Amat team that you are talking about can play any team in the country except the very few elite (Aquinas, SJB, Mater Dei, IMG) so I do believe they are overrated I agree but that feeling comes from such a saturation in the so cal talent pool

@football 101 have you team schedule a basketball or baseball game against Cantwell then let’s talk.

    @RealityCheck
My point is that Amat is never as good as advertised. They’re a good program, yes, but they just can’t compete with the top dogs in division 1, and they need to just face that fact and play in D2 or D3.

I will never understand the negativity directed towards any school, or any bunch of kids. Pioneer did not win a game last year. They won this years first game of the season. That’s a 100% improvement over last year. That is something to be proud about in my book.
Looking forward to a good game under the lights.

Historically the only team on that list that could even play a close game against Amat has been Charter Oak so I don’t know where you get off saying they are overrated.

I’m not a Amat fan in fact I graduated from Cantwell, the truth is until a SGV team consistently puts out a team that plays at a high level year after year Amat is still top dog.

Bishop Amat is so overrated. They haven’t won a CIF since 1995. Give me a break. They’re so cocky, too. About what, I have no idea? They’re a glorified division 2 or 3 team at best, but they insist on “competing” in division because they think they’re that good. Mater Dei totally exposed them for what they truly are.

I can’t vouch for how well Pioneer matches up with Covina, but I do know the Titans have trouble matching-up with virtually anyone, which is the reason CIF is casting them into the league of underachievers euphemistically called the 605.

If any of you folks had been paying attention, MVnews does not cover Bishop Amat because that school does not recognize MVnews as a legitimate newspaper.

If CIF had any interest in policing private schools the way they do public there wouldn’t be a problem. There is an unwritten rule at CIF and within the media that covers HS football. Private schools can go after any kid at any time in any way, but public schools should play only with kids who have lived in their city since they were 5. A huge double standard within CIF and the media.

Pioneer-Covina: Pioneers tandem sophomore QB’s and Kyle Dighton snatching the ball out of the air maybe the Titans can keep the ball away from Nin Burns II for a bit. We realistically don’t match up well with a team of Covina’s stature but I like the test.

Hey 3 of the top 5 teams are private schools, MVS cuts B.A. So, they should cut all private schools; thats my vote! No La Salle, Marantha, Rio Hondo Prep, Pasadena Poly, ETC. Hey they Have that Christian paper “The Tidings”, or the “Christian Science Monitor”. LOL!

Stop it with the Bishop Amat this and that! There is no comparison here. Private schools like that cannot be compared to public schools. They have the best of the best. Its like comparing an all-pro football team to a regular football team. They have the best players from every public school. They better be the best!

I guess If cheap shotting our best lineman on the knee in the 1st quarter counts. You didn’t win because of penny you won cuz you were spotted 4 turnovers by our QB… you won last year in game 1 also and then we made you turn in your gear in November.. don’t worry you will see us again.

You’re right Norwalk Alum. Penny looked tough and you guys outhit us. Penny, #4 and #20 are suds! But with all those big bad dudes, it still wasn’t by much. And don’t forget, you won in August last season too. But When it really mattered in November you guys were silenced! I’m sure Norwalk fans are still haunted by the name Gabriel Huerta. I’d be quieter if I were you

Amat is still the best team in the SGV hands down, nobody plays at their level or the competition. Hence a 2-8 Amat team is still the best around.

Better check us out. Even with a limping Penny at QB the kid refused to tap out. Norwalk thumped and tamed El Rancho’s you ain’t been hit team. Their bodies were littering our field. Thats why the game took so long. Their players couldn’t get to their feet. Keep overlooking us MVS.

Kudos to MVS for keeping it real. There is another local publication that repeatedly ranks Bishop Amat as #1 no matter what! If Amat goes 2-8, #1; if they go 0-10, #1, and so on. Ridiculous! This is every year. MVS keep up the real and honest rankings.

The Downey group can still find glory in a couple wins against local opponents, and with any luck, participate in an early round playoff exit.
