Game Night: Week One

Steven Comstock and Northview try to bounce back vs. Rosemead

All kickoffs are at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated

Friday September 1

Cathedral (1-0) at Arcadia (1-0)

Both teams are coming off victories. The Apaches got over on La Salle while Cathedral took it to Santa Fe. It will be tough for Arcadia to move the ball on the Phantoms quick defense. They will need to establish a ground game to slow down the pace. Trying to throw against Cathedral may be an impossible task. Bryce Young aired it out last week and will be looking to go vertical again. If the Phantoms jump out early it will be tough for Arcadia to come back. Cathedral by three touchdowns.

Cathedral 34 Arcadia 13

Temple City (1-0) at Arroyo (1-0) Mid Valley Classic

Last Year: Arroyo 50-0

Well it won’t be 50-0 but it should be decided in the third quarter. Nice win last week for Temple City in the head coaching debut of Riley Saxon. The Rams do look improved from last year but the gap is still big between the Rams and the Knights. Pasadena Poly is one thing but Arroyo is another. The Defending CIF Champion Knights are coming off a 35-28 win over Covina and the offense was clicking with Ernesto Camacho behind center. Arroyo starts off fast and doesn’t let up. The Rams may have a moment here and there but not enough for the win. Arroyo goes to 2-0.

Arroyo 31 Temple City 10

Pasadena (1-0) at Maranatha (1-0)

Pasadena held its own with Buena Park while Maranatha knocked off Rim of the World in Zero Week. Kwon Peterson had a big night for the Minutemen throwing for 365 yards and four touchdowns. Pasadena gave up 31 last week so the defense could be susceptible to the air attack. Both teams can score so it could be a shootout. Look for a back and forth affair with Maranatha finally putting it away in the fourth quarter. Minutemen survive.

Maranatha 35 Pasadena 31

La Salle (0-1) at Monrovia (0-1)

Last Year: La Salle 37-0

Monrovia has had trouble the last couple of years getting out of the gate. The Wildcats fell last week to Burbank now they get another team that they have struggled against. La Salle routed Monrovia last year 37-0 but the Lancers are coming off of a 20-10 loss last week to Arcadia. Monrovia’s offense needs to get going. If not it could be a long night. Eventually La Salle’s offense will wake up and break through against a tired Monrovia D. If the Wildcats can avoid turnovers and mistakes they’ll be able to get it done. They may need a couple more weeks to find their way. La Salle has just enough.

La Salle 21 Monrovia 17

Northview (0-1) at Rosemead (0-1)

Last Year: Northview 47-14

Both teams came up short in the opener but their opponents were slightly different. Just slightly. South Pasadena had enough to beat the Panthers while Charter Oak, which resembled something just  this side of Florida State, beat up on Northview. Rosemead will eventually get Matt Castaneda his first victory as head coach. It just won’t be this week. Steven Comstock and company have a big night for the Vikings. Northview scores early and often. Vikes get their first win.

Northview 35 Rosemead 7

La Puente (1-0) at South El Monte (1-0)

Last Year: South El Monte 27-12

The Eagles are more versatile now. Yes they still have Sal Tovar, who rushed for over 100 yards last week in a win over Alhambra, but with quarterback Daniel Olmos they can now throw the ball as well. La Puente got a rivalry win over Workman in Zero Week. It could turn into a slugfest with the defense forcing a key turnover. The Eagles are the ones who will come up with the big play and then Tovar runs out the clock. South holds on.

South El Monte 17 La Puente 14

Los Altos (1-0) at Wilson (0-1)

last Year: Los Altos 59-0

Well it won’t be 59-0. Actually it might be. Los Altos racked up 42 points last week against San Marino. Wilson managed just seven in a loss to Gladstone. This might not be the same Los Altos team of 2016 but it is the same Wilson team. Ok not 59…49. The Conquerors own The Wheel.

Los Altos 49 Wilson 0

Garfield (1-0) at Schurr (1-0)

Garfield proved last week it can put up some points in a 39-36 win over Montebello. Schurr didn’t light it up but the Spartans did manage a 21-14 win over Cal. Expect the scoreboard operator to be busy. It may come down to who makes the last stop. Schurr will give it a run but in the end Garfield scores more. A late touchdown lifts the Bulldogs.

Garfield 38 Schurr 31

Due to global warming football should be moved back one month. Teachers want their 3 weeks vacation over Christmas and will never do it but wishful thinking.

Long was going to quit a hour before the game. Because he hadn’t got paid as promised. Superintendent steps in as says Monday he will get his money. Fred Robledo has on his Twitter account game moved to Saturday. Must be a wierd situation to see program go down so quick. Plus also seen Spathais everyday there as he teaches there and then heads to Los Altos after school. Well they can say at Bassett they got a winning football coach on campus but he just doesn’t coach there

Both Bassett and Azusa unified have clowns running these district. My son come home from the game Friday and said his coach resigned because the principal (Mr Griego of Bassett high school) wasn’t going to pay him. They played and got crushed by a weak team because the superintendent had to step in and restore order. I don’t know what’s going to happen in weeks to come. I guess this is a good indication. I hope things change over here. What a disasters senior for my son.

Accompanied a friend to a FRESHMEN game between Northview and Rosemead, and may I say it was one of the most battling, hardhitting games I have seen at that level in a while, Rosemead was down by 25 and was coming back, but fell a few short….my hats off to both teams…very, very entertaining game.

I hate to say this but, I saw La Puente and if the Eagles don’t win by at least 3 scores, thats 15 pts. They may not get 2nd place in the Mission Valley League unless they fix what is not quite right.

Some weeks they’ll have South shills and St.Paul. They don’t have El Monte, Mountain View this week and it’s in their neighborhood.

Trib don’t leave any room on the nuts for anyone else.

Instead of asking why don’t you help out then. You should work for MVS and help cover those school. Find a solution to your problem

I tend to agree with Henry…its sad that you miss specific areas. St. Paul vs. Montebello, Bell Gardens vs. El Rancho, and Bonita vs. Santa Fe just to name a few. I understand you ma not have the people to cover all the local games but when you have area teams playing other area teams they should be covered…or at least talked about! You are covering Pasadena and LA area, heck how about Whittier, Montebello, Pico Rivera…

Arroyo will win but the game will be much closer. I like Monrovia beating LaSalle this week. South El Monte will win by at least three touchdowns.

@Henry, BA doesn’t want MVS to cover them. It is understandable you don’t want to be where you are not wanted. No one cares about St. Paul or South Hill. There is a connection with Buena Park with the old regime in Anthony White, Jude Oliva, Matt Lopez, Eric Alias, etc. Burbank and CV is in the Pacific. Downey and Cathedral pays the bills. Hope that helps.

How is that you do not cover schools such as Bishop Amat, ST. Paul, South Hills but cover the immediate neighboring schools and you cover Buena Park, Sierra Canyon, Burbank, Downey, Crescenta Valley, Cathedral. I guess I’m a little confused on your coverage.
