Dark Knight For Rosemead

By Joe Torosian

(Rosemead)—Ernesto Camacho and Rey Cotero connected for two touchdowns to lead the Arroyo Knights to a 35-6 victory over the Rosemead Panthers on Friday night at Rod Marinelli Stadium.

The win improved the Knights to 6-0 on the season and the Panthers fell to 1-5.

“It’s a rivalry game,” said Arroyo HC, Jim Singiser. “I don’t think these guys (the Knights) understand that and that they’re most team’s biggest game. So we knew they’d come out fired up, wanting to pound the ball to make a statement. I thought we answered back well. We executed on offense, we had a lot of time to throw, and when we did that we made plays and moved the ball.”

Camacho completed 22 of 31 passes for 294 yards and three touchdowns. The bulk of the grabs and yardage went to Cotero who finished with 11 catches for 159 yards scores of 12 and 39-yards.

Camacho’s third touchdown pass went to Andrew Lechuga with 7:29 to play in the third quarter. On the play, Camacho pumped right to the sideline and then went down the seam to a wide open Lechuga for six.

With the score 35-0 at the start of the fourth quarter a running clock was put into effect. Mead scored with 19-ticks left on the clock when Steven Long caught a Alex Arqueta pass in the corner of the end zone.

Arroyo was efficient from the get-go scoring on four of its five first-half possessions.

After a 12-yard touchdown toss to Cotero, the Knights lit the board again five minutes later on Steven Ocariz’s 8-yard run. Midway through the second quarter, Daniel Mendoza slashed in from 5-yards and before you could say, “Jim Sefton,” the rout was on.

With 37 seconds left in the half, Cotero caught his second scoring pass from Camacho from 39-yards out. The hands-man made a one-handed grab, landed awkwardly, regained his balance and raced to the end zone.

“We still got to clean up stuff,” Singiser added. “We look good, we scored on four out of five of our first drives, we had a shutout going till the last play of the game. We did what we needed to do but there’s little things here and there that we got to clean up.”

Next week the Knights are at Bergstrom Stadium to host the 6-0 South El Monte Eagles to decide the Mission Valley League…and of course, the fate of the world. Rosemead is at home against 3-3 Mountain View.

Note: A fight broke out in the fourth quarter in front of the Rosemead bench. A Panther player was ejected and several unsportsmanlike penalties were given to both teams.

NWO things sure have changed in the part of the valley. They just don’t have the horses anymore and if they do the kids don’t want to play like they used to.

Always a great game to go spectate, Arroyo is great in timing the routes, and # 84 Cotero is a real stud , the QB from Arroyo is legit, QB from Rosemead , , HC of Rosemead why do you have a 3 foot QB who cant scramble ? can’t pass, can’t throw, can’t hit, weighs 80Lbs , I would put in a replacement even if he is not a QB, I know maybe he is your friends son? Rosemead hashed a lot of that going on, Also the DC is terrible, he has no clue at formations, he has no adjustments on players or schemes, I couldn’t tell if it was zone or the players were standing around watching the play.
On the other hand I did see a drop in talent from what we are accustomed , and size they were like a junior HS VS a real HS

Rosemead had the opportunity to hire Anthony White years ago and the AD pick
one of his friends instead. Ever since then the program had gone down hill. The program just ain’t what it used to be.

Can’t make winners ,when coaches condone players to have no respect for the game, eachother, cheerleaders, faculty members, the parents and their school..history has shown that self respect, discipline, Hard work and true character are ingredients to greatness..cant build a winning team on intimidation and browbeating or belittling of players…cant force the players to play Hard if they don’t respect you, once the players(team) trust you ,he’ll believe in what your teaching, he’ll believe in himself, he’ll believe in the team, then the team will believe in victory…Try it coaches, you’ll have a lot to gain….really think by being oblivious to your issues it will fix itself???….I don’t think so.!!!!

Talk in the stands is that Coach Matt is in way over his head. Kids are not disciplined i.e. the fight, and coaching staff is unprepared and incapable of making adjustments i.e. 11/159/2.

Running clock in the 4th quarter?! Of a Rosemead/Arroyo game?!

Sad day to be a (former) Panther.

I sure hope those other Eagles names I’ve been hearing bring it on Friday because Sal Tovar is getting the brakes put in! The Knights have their own back as well in Ocariz.
