(Covina) – Covina outscored Workman 35-8 in the fourth quarter and went on to rout the Lobos 76-39 Wednesday night in the first round of the CIF Division 4A Playoffs.

Covina led 41-31 after three and then came out with a 15-3 burst to break it wide open in the fourth. Rudy Suarez led the charge with nine points – three three pointers in the final frame and finished with a game high 18. Andrew Higley also knocked down a three in the quarter and had five in the fourth to finish with 11.

Dale Walker was the other Colt in double figures with 15, Clarence McFarlane and Daniel Hernandez had nine and seven respectively.

Although the Colts finished fast, their start was anything but. They led 11-8 after a first quarter that was filled with missed shots and turnovers. Covina increased the lead to 23-17 at halftime but converted just two of 12 shots from the floor in the second quarter. Covina made up for some of that at the free throw line hitting eight of 10.

Workman struggled mightily from the floor throughout the contest. The Lobos made just seven of 28 shots in the first half and finished 13 of 58 for the game in a shooting performance that resembled a cat named Frankenstein.

Ike Udenwu III, who also plays quarterback for the football team, led Workman with 14 points. He did hit a pair of threes but didn’t fare much better then the rest of the team from the field. Joe Carreon added ten for the Lobos. Workman was still in the game until things got ugly early in the fourth quarter.

For the Lobos the season comes to an end with an overall record of 10-17. The Colts advanced to the second round where they will face Salesian Friday night.
