(Montebello) – Rolling Hills Prep scored the first 13 points of the game and went on to rout Schurr 74-44 Thursday night in the CIF Division 3AA Quarter Finals.
Schurr didn’t score it’s first point of the game until there was 3:55 left in the first quarter on a Steven Davalos free throw. Rolling Hills Prep led by 12 after one at 21-9 and increased it to 39-23 at the half.
Freshman guard Benny Gealer was the catalyst for the Huskies scoring 14 points in the first half. He finished with a game high 29 as he hit three three pointers and was a perfect eight for eight from the line.
The Huskies increased the lead to 25 points at the end of three outscoring the Spartans 19-10 in the third quarter.
Schurr had one final push left going on an 11-0 run to open the fourth quarter. Omar Olivas desperately tried to keep the Spartans close knocking down three treys in the final frame to highlight the rally. But 14 was as close as Schurr could get. Rolling Hills then turned on the burners and the next thing you knew the lead was 30.
Gealer sealed the Spartans fate sinking six straight free throws for Rolling Hills.
Gealer did a majority of the damage for the Huskies but he had some help. Vaughn Flowers had six points in the first quarter and finished with 15 overall and JT Tan had eight points down in the paint. Troy Murphy Jr. had nine.
Olivas led the Spartans with 21 including five bombs from long distance and Davalos scored 10 but no other player was in double figures.
Schurr finished the season 21-10 overall and a second place finish in the Almont. Rolling Hills advances to the Semi Finals on Saturday.
