Game Night: Week 3

Keanu Tauvao and Northview have a huge matchup with Covina (Photo by Duane Barker).

All kickoffs are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated.

Thursday September 7

Mt. View (3-0) at Temple City (2-0)

Temple City has scored 91 points in its first two games. Mt View is undefeated as well but the Vikings victories haven’t been as impressive as the Rams. Mt. View can score but the question is can the Vikes stop Jake Jones and Judah Douglas who have been lighting it up for Temple City? Maybe once in awhile but not enough. Rams improve to 3-0.

Garey (0-3) at South El Monte (3-0)

Can Joseph Rangel and the Colts run the ball against the Vikings defense? (Photo by Duane Barker).

South El Monte is off to a good start. The Eagles have won their first three games including last week’s comeback against Montebello. Garey has struggled, losing its first three including two blowouts in the last two games. South El Monte jumps out early and never looks back.

Friday September 8

Arroyo (0-3) at Bell Gardens (2-1)

It’s been a rough start for Arroyo. The Knights are 0-3 and all three of their losses haven’t been close. Arroyo has been rotating quarterbacks trying to find an offensive rhythm. Bell Gardens has won two of three but the Lancers one loss was a 35-0 blowout by El Rancho. Arroyo will be in this one. It will come down to a field goal in the fourth quarter but BG gets it done.

El Rancho (2-1) at Montebello (1-2)

El Rancho got rocked last week by Monrovia while Montebello let one get away against South El Monte. ER’s offense can be explosive and they should be able to get that back this week. This is the toughest team the Oilers have played this season. The Dons will show that Friday night. El Rancho gets back on track.

Northview (2-1) vs Covina (3-0) (Covina District Field)

Everybody is looking at this one as the best game of the week and for good reason. Northview has run over two of its first three opponents with the only loss being to a tough Sierra Vista (Las Vegas) team. Covina is 3-0 and its offense, led by Jake Duronslet, is hitting on all cylinders. There will be some points put on the board but in the end the Vikings will be a little too physical for the Colts. Northview grounds, pounds and eventually wins.

Schurr (2-1) at Baldwin Park (1-2)

Schurr has won two straight after losing its first game to South Pasadena in Zero Week. However the Tigers are unbeaten this year. Baldwin Park got worked by that same South Pas team last week. Schurr should have enough on both sides of the ball. Spartans win their third straight.

Crescenta Valley (1-1) at San Marino (3-0)

San Marino is on a roll. The Titans have won their first three games in relatively easy fashion. Quarterback Brady Beck and lineman Mitch Mooney have been terrific for San Marino. Crescenta Valley is coming off a 24-7 loss to West Covina. Titans remain unbeaten.

Saturday September 9

Bonita (3-0) vs San Dimas (2-1) (Citrus College)

Bonita may be the best team in the area. The Bearcats are piling up points and the defense has been solid as well. The Smudgepot is always a great game. This year should be no different. San Dimas will be in it but Bonita prevails in the fourth quarter.

Northview loss to a Vegas team concerns you? Maybe that 5A Vegas team was pretty freaking good. Covina does look tough though, we will see Friday. Good luck to all the kids playing. Have fun, and enjoy the moment.

Also, does anyone know what happened to Colt45? Haven’t seen him post in a while. Hope all is well.

I think Tim is always a little too safe on some of the score predictions. He rarely calls blowouts or running clocks, but those happen a lot in HS football

    Smoke and Mirrors Go Poof!
First off, good for Temple City to win two games in a row. But this is not the 1970s and it is two wins courtesy of scheduling teams with Cal Preps ratings of -58 to -71. So enjoy it while you can get it, because it is not going to last, as the schedule gets hard for TC once the RHL league games start.
The high water mark could be the Poly game where TC might have a punchers chance against a competitively ranked team.

The ones I lost to you were by a hair. The Montebello , Marina games saved you. I disagree, Crescenta Valley, Baldwin Park will win. That Northview loss to some team from Vegas concerns me. I’ll take Covina. This could be their year.
From T. Peterson: You got me on the CV game. Gossard (CV head coach) let me know about it too haha. But you missed on the other two. I knew that “some team” from Vegas was good and I was sure (no pun intended) that Schurr would win.

Covina v Northview is definitely the game of the week. Old school style coaches going at it with a bunch of tough and talented kids. Can’t wait.
