@ LP: I agree. The current playoff system penalizes some teams which have had good seasons by placing them in higher divisions than they should be in, and it also rewards mediocrity. Third-place teams should never be highly seeded in any division.
I’d much rather have us go back to the previous system. Forming the playoff divisions after the end of the regular season is a joke; this method is way too ad hoc in nature and creates lots of opportunities for favoritism.
Agree 💯…..At a stage of program development, scheduling these type of games is good coaching (TC this year) . But beating these type of teams doesn’t mean that you’re good , and program leaders need to be able to keep things in perspective so they continue to improve. Instead , they are content in this relative success and things slide downwards.
Playoff structures randomly reward mediocrity I.e 3rd place finishers get top seeds in lower Divisions and contentment is institutionalized!
None of the teams that TC has defeated will even make the D14 playoffs ….Azusa outside shot if they can beat SV . Agree with your general breakdown , but it’s not a given they can beat qualifiers .
If TC makes playoffs I have no doubt they can beat those low competition teams, that they already been playing. Its just TC has zero star players or anyone who can compete against better teams. All they had was Judah. It sucks that a generational talent like that gets injured in his last season in high school, Judah’s team will lose all 5 games due to his injury unless he comes back in time. I wish him a speedy recovery but sad to say that his teams spotlight will wither away with his absence.
Low Profile then what do you recommend for these programs that only beat lesser teams? Who cares if these teams play at a much lower level than OC (most) teams? I don’t know this but I think OC principals, athletic directors, and administrations want ,yes WANT , to win and know that student/athletes reaching their potential on fields also . Therefor the district believes it is very important to be patient and hire the very best possible head coaches , and quality classroom teachers who have successful athletic backgrounds
Common Sense
September 20, 2024 – 7:14 pm | Permalink try to make the ‘by far best players on the team’ play one way and they may be playing for another school next year.
Anonymous why a genius?
They have a chance vs San Marino at home last game of season if Judah is fully recovered . Still
Make them big underdogs on basis of line strength and overall athleticism.
Poly game with likely be with current lineup and that will be dogfight despite Poly’s recent problems . They haven’t been close to the same since Schmoke left after 2021 season .
@ Recruiter, Low Profile & Highschool Ball: I think Temple City can beat San Marino, and the Rams might have a chance against Pasadena Poly.
Monrovia, La Canada, and South Pasadena ought to be the top three teams in the Rio Hondo League. In my view, Temple City’s best shot for a third-place finish would be an upset victory over South Pas. However, the Tigers are big up front and run the ball very well, so I don’t see that happening.
Yes, thats very true, Poly is winnable but thats it, because if were being honest Temple City is still horrible and the only one making it interesting to watch them was Judah. They will most likely go winless in league. If they had their star, Judah it would be a different story but since he’s injured the lights are definitely too bright for his team. I wish Judah a speedy recovery but without him Temple City has 0 chances of winning.
Poly game is toss up. That’s the only winnable game …….i mean who’s the best team they beat? Whittier ? They were life and death to beat feeble Azusa team so not sure how they could have won without the starters playing ?
If they sneak in playoffs and Judah gets healthy , they could make run in D14 . Good luck to his recovery process
Temple City is 5-0 but can they win more games without the superstar Judah Douglas? They won against horrible teams such as Bosco Tech and Azusa who they barely beat without Judah, these two games they could’ve won without their starters. Its finally league and the big question is how will they go on to win without Judah Douglas the guy who has carried them for 3 years and who has lead them in the first 2 games this season? If they think that number 11 Jadon Griffin will replace Judah Douglas then they are wrong, he is a pretty good player don’t get me wrong but Judah is talent we haven’t seen in a while. I think TC will go 0-5 in league without their superstar.
They came closer than expected to Valley Christian
Sierra Vista Is at 0-5 now
From T. Peterson: 0-4. The Bell Gardens game was canceled due to excessive heat. There was no forfeit.
Until you play someone decent . This is the devolution of SGV football; everyone in area is getting worse , and you are taking comfort in beating other eroding programs ….. until you play someone from OC or South Bay . Enjoy your MVL title defense
St.Francis and LS will be fine. They will easily qualify for the playoffs because they will win spots in their leagues. They might play in D6 for LS and D9 for SF, get top seeds and get rings.
Anonymous wrong again
Low Profile. Arroyo won the game and it don’t matter if cantwell is terrible. A win is a win
Common Sense? Are you sure the coach has to recruit and recruit many players? I think , yes I may agree a little, if enough talent on the roster players play only defense or offense. But is it at all possible many of those players want to be on both sides of the ball because they love both playing defensive and offensive football? Maybe several players need to be on both sides of football to develop important skills and have better ability to go on to the next level with enough talent to play given the opportunity coaching staff directs
LS in disarray
What do you know another week another Alhambra loss got job administration in hiring Mike and making the program a bigger joke
Same can be said about BA.
Agreed… garbage
Can SGVN get off Nogales nutts? Coach overrated and anything touches is DELETED
Crean is for real. CalPreps must know something lol
Cantwell must be bad then
I saw that in the two games I saw Arroyo play, Sierra Vista and Arcadia.
No kicking game and special teams. Too many coached don’t really know timing rules and it costs them games. Using unnecessary time outs or not calling them quickly enough. Also not getting out of bounds or keeping the ball inbounds when trying to conserve time or run out the clock, whatever is appropriate.
Another messy game by arroyo. They honestly have the worst clock management in the SGV. Moyé doesn’t know what the hell is going on, why would you onside kick everytime give the ball back to them with great field position? Dude went for it on 4th and 13 and turned over to give Cantwell great field position. Why the hell don’t you just punt it deep? Boy, and another sideline tantrum again last night. When does this dude learn? F bombing coaches and players on field and sideline? This dude has no class what so ever. If I were one of his coaches, I’d have quit already. This dude is the most classless person out there, he’s ruined the tradition at arroyo, dude has ruined the program fully, kids don’t want to play for him. They don’t respect him, being in the stands, the parents can’t stand him either… Arroyo better fire him as soon as the buzzer goes off on the last game.
From T. Peterson: That being said they beat Cantwell. So is Cantwell that bad?
Cream Lutheran of Irvine came into its game with La Serna rated 24.6. The Boys on the hill stood at 31.3. This should have been a win for the Whittier group, but instead it was a 20-0 spanking by the visitors. Expect the numbers to change!
I refer to ON CAMPUS recruiting, not poaching kids from outside, as a key to having enough players to make separate offensive and defensive units happen. I’m well aware that most SGV valley teams don’t get many transfers.
Arroyo 36 – Cantwell-Sacred Heart 32
CS: You aint following high school ball when you make such a flat out statement. First off most SGV teams don’t recruit much less get enough experienced players that you can field seperate teams. For a team like ER to try this is admirable. Even teams like Mater Dei and St. Johns don’t do this. To your point though in the last several seasons ER has had lots of key injuries and this year though they have had a few certainly not as many and not as serious when they occur. You have to coach up every player on your roster because they have to be ready when their number is called and that is what is happening this year. Plenty of young players seeing the field this year. Look at ER’s stats on MP and see how many different players are touching the ball and making tackles. And these guys are put in in tough spots not garbage time. All ER games are tight.
Having enough players to have separate offenses and defenses is football 101. It means your guys are fresher than guys who never leave the field. It also means your risk of injury substantially decreases. Virtually no college or pro teams have players going both ways, so that’s obviously the approach that will benefit a high school squad, providing the coach has recruited enough bodies to do so.
Any coach/program who can pull that off in HS successfully is a genius.
Bell Gardens 29 Arlington 21
I thought it was dumb at first but Coach Medrano made what’s shaping up to be a wise decision to have his players only play on one side of the ball. Helped them in the 2nd and 4th quarters when those big boys from Fontana who were all going both ways were obviously tired.
