1. The New York Yankees activated Aaron Judge from the injured list Monday night. Judge has been out for more than three months with a fractured rib.
2. The New York Giants released wide receiver Darius Slayton Monday. Slayton, who was the Giants most tenured player, was with the team for seven seasons.
3. The Atlanta Falcons named Tua Tagovailoa as their starting quarterback.
4. SMU beat Florida State 27-24 Monday night in the season opener for both teams.
5. Dallas Cowboys Pro Bowl left guard Tyler Smith will be out for at least four games after he undergoes surgery on his left thumb Tuesday.
6. The NFL season kicks off Wednesday with Seattle at New England at 5:20 PT on NBC. The Rams will play the San Francisco 49ers Thursday at 5:35 PM in Australia.
7. On this day in 1965 Bert Campaneris of the Kansas City A’s plays all nine positions in a game.
8. New York Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole turns 36 today.

Chesney may be of a mind to rehab the UCLA program and remain there for his lifetime. His also might be of a mind to desire a national championship along with a considerably higher salary than what the Bruins can offer. If the latter is true, this man has to realize that in this era of NIL payments, USC is able to attract and retain better talent than the Westwood operation.
Former Bruin D-coordinator D’Anton Lynn was drawn to the Trojans from his UCLA gig by a doubling of salary, but he also had to like the Trojans’ ability to get better players. As I’ve said, maybe Chesney will live out his life on the Bruin sideline, but to my way of thinking, the enticements Troy can dangle in his face are just too much to ignore.
As for Vrooman’s assertion that UCLA’s “prestigious” status has anything to do with this matter, I have to say that Bob isn’t there to wallow in an ivory tower; he’s there for top-notch football, and UCLA cannot financially support that goal.

Interim UCLA athletic director Tim Harris is doing his level-best to boost attendance at the Bruins’ Saturday home opener by purchasing 300 tickets and giving them away to lucky fans. Undoubtedly, this is meant to create a buzz around the program, more so than last week’s win over Cal. I continue to monitor the progress of Bob Chesney, future replacement for the mistaken hire known as Lincoln Riley.
