(Alhambra)- The Almont champion Moors broke open a 3-2 contest with Gahr on Friday with a four run fifth inning and went on to a 8-4 victory in the first round of the CIF playoffs.

The victory was also Steve Gewecke’s 200th at Alhambra.

Happy?

“I’m feeling great we finally got some runs on the board,” said Gewecke.

Since dropping a 20-run bomb on Schurr three weeks ago the Moors have struggled, scoring only seven runs in the last four games.

In the fifth freshman Juan Crespo poked a shot into right field. Senior Cody Heaton followed with a single to right center to score two more and Alhambra was fast-tracking to the second round the of the playoffs.

“Cody came through again,” said Gewecke. “Just like he did against Montebello, when he’s hitting we’re a different team.”

Southpaw Jonathan Beltran went the distance for the win.

“He didn’t have his best stuff today, but he has so much heart he got the job done.”

Alhambra (17-10) plays Bonita (20-5) on Tuesday, the Miramonte champs. Gewecke will start junior right hander Greg Saldate (8-2, 2.06 ERA) against the Bearcats.
