Jose Nunez and the Aztecs are in control of the Montview
It’s been all Azusa all year and there’s no way that’s going to change now. The Aztecs will run the table and wait for a nice playoff seed.
The rest of the league is starting to shape up as well. La Puente is the second best team and Gladstone has emerged in the number three spot. After that it’s a toss up. Sierra Vista seems to have the edge. Where did Ganesha come from?
Azusa (8-0, 5-0) – The Aztecs haven’t really been tested all year. Ontario Christian was their closest game of the season and Azusa won by three touchdowns. Abraham Ochoa, Jose Nunez and the rest have just been too much to deal with. Three more games until the real season begins.
Body of Work: 29-34 overall record of opponents; 3-0 against teams with winning records.
Games Remaining: at Workman, Gladstone (5-10 record remaining opponents)
Projection: First
La Puente (5-2, 3-1) – The Warriors have distinguished themselves as the second best team in the league. Early season wins over El Monte and Northview gave them some momentum and then they knocked off Gladstone, (4-1 in league), 28-7. Jose Perez is a solid back. LP still has Sierra Vista this week.
Body of Work: 23-26 overall record of opponents; 0-2 against teams with winning records.
Games Remaining: at Sierra Vista, at Bassett, Duarte (8-13 record remaining opponents)
Projection: Second
Gladstone (4-4, 4-1) – The Gladiators struggled in the non league schedule but have won four out of five in the Montview. Their 9-7 win over 5-2 Sierra Vista last week was impressive. It also gave G-Stone the inside track to third place.
Body of Work: 32-28 overall record of opponents; 1-3 against teams with winning records.
Games Remaining: Duarte, Azusa (8-6 record remaining opponents)
Projection: Third
Sierra Vista (5-2, 2-2) – Giovanni Rivera has flown under the radar all year. He has rushed for over 1900 yards and 13 touchdowns in seven games. If he was at Charter Oak or Bishop Amat they would be selling his replica jersey at the snack bar. However even with Rivera’s heroics the Dons will be hard pressed to make the post season. They might take fourth but this year that might not be enough.
Body of Work: 16-32 overall record of opponents; 1-1 against teams with winning records.
Games Remaining: La Puente, Ganesha, at Bassett (11-12 record remaining opponents)
Projection: Fourth
Ganesha (3-5, 2-3) – A three win season can be considered successful in the land of the Giants. Ganesha was at .500 before running into the juggernaut that is Azusa Thursday night. Dave Fleming has Ganesha on the right track.
Body of Work: 31-28 overall record of opponents; 1-2 against teams with winning records.
Games Remaining: at Sierra Vista, Workman (6-8 record remaining opponents)
Projection: Fifth
Bassett (3-5, 2-3) – The Olympians have to win at least one of its last two games to equal last year’s win total of four. That’s not bad considering they have a new coach and reportedly had only 15 players on the roster back in the summer.
Body of Work: 25-33 overall record of opponents; 0-3 against teams with winning records.
Games Remaining: La Puente, Sierra Vista (10-4 record remaining opponents)
Projection: Sixth
Workman (1-6, 0-4) – The Lobos have a new coach in Scott Morrison who made his debut with a 34-0 win over Keppel. But that was the last game Workman has won. The potential is there – Workman made the playoffs last season – but it’s going to take a couple of years.
Body of Work: 22-29 overall record of opponents; 0-3 against teams with winning records.
Games Remaining: Duarte, Azusa, at Ganesha (11-11 record remaining opponents)
Projection: Seventh
Duarte (0-6, 0-4) – This is the biggest rebuilding project Tip Sanders has ever taken on. He’s proven he can do it – see Blair and Marshall – but with the Falcons he has literally had to start from scratch. Hopefully he sticks around to see the fruits of his labor.
Body of Work: 25-21 overall record of opponents; 0-2 record against teams with winning records.
Games Remaining; Workman, Gladstone, at La Puente (10-12 record remaining opponents)
Projection: Eighth
