2013 Northwest Defensive Coordinator of The year: Bishop Diego DC Ralph Molina

Bishop Diego DC Ralph Molina has to be happy with his Cardinals defense. They've only allowed 19 points in five games, they pitched three shutouts, have only allowed two touchdowns, and haven't allowed an opponent to reach the end zone in the last eight quarters.

Bishop Diego played one less than the guaranteed maximum allowed, 13, yet they allowed the fewest points, 132, in the Northwest Division in 2013 by 47. Accident, you can say that, long time folks in Santa Barbara will say it was Ralph Molina.

So will we.

Ralph Molina (Bishop Diego Class of ’79), a Santa Barbara Police lieutenant, has been coaching prep and junior college football for more than 30 years.

The Cardinals defense pitched five shutouts this season. Comparatively in 2012, in the same number of games, they shut no one out and allowed 152 points.

This season Bishop Diego recorded 41.5 sacks (14.5 by Nolan Tooley), 17 interceptions (6 by Anthony Carter), and were led in tackles by linebacker Christian Pearson with 132.

Nordhoff DC Cliff Farrar, last year’s winner, received much consideration but the MVS staff came to a unanimous conclusion the best this year was Ralph Molina.
