By Tim Peterson (Whittier) – Margarito Beltran was dismissed as the head coach at La Serna Thursday as per a District decision. According to Rich Russell, the Assistant Superintendent of Personnel for the Whittier Union High School District, the decision to remove Beltran as head coach was due to allegations involving the physical restraint of a special needs student outside of the classroom.
Russell released this statement. “Following allegations of an incident involving physical restraint of a special needs student, a La Serna High School teacher, who is also a member of the school’s ath1letics staff, was placed on paid administrative leave last week pending the outcome of an investigation. However, after violating the terms of his paid leave, the employee has been removed from his coaching position and remains on paid administrative leave from his teaching position.”
Andy George, a La Serna assistant, will take over as head coach.
Beltran guided La Serna to three straight CIF Southeast Division Final games winning the title in 2013. He took over in 2007 and went 76-26 in nine seasons.
