(Montebello) – Schurr blitzed El Monte with three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to break open a three point game and pummel the Lions 42-18 Thursday night at Montebello High.

The Lions, down 21-6 in the second quarter and 21-12 at the half cut the lead to just three early in the third quarter on a 80 yard touchdown by Roy Barajas off of a screen pass from Edward Dominguez.

But the Spartans ended it in the fourth on a pair of touchdown runs by quarterback Aaron Rosales. Rosales capped a 65 yard drive with a 17 yard TD scamper early in the fourth and then after stopping El Monte on fourth down, Rosales finished a quick march with a one-yard run.

Anthony Varela was the man on the ground all night for the Spartans. He scored three times in the second quarter on a nine yard run, a fifty yard scamper and later on a 15 yard jaunt to put Schurr up 21-6.

*** Varela had 24 carries for 182 yards and three touchdowns.

*** Dominguez completed 17 of 33 for 307 yards and two scores for El Monte but was hurt by three interceptions. 143 of those yards came on two screen passes that Barajas turned into touchdowns.

*** Barajas caught seven passes for 190 yards and a pair of touchdowns of 63 and 80 yards.

*** Robert Gonzalez had seven receptions for 90 yards for the Lions.

*** El Monte never punted on its 11 total possessions. The Lions scored three touchdowns, turned the ball over four times and three times were stopped on fourth down inside their own 40.

*** El Monte scored first on a 19 yard scoring strike from Dominguez to Saul Chavez.

*** Schurr had 297 yards on the ground overall.

*** Rosales had nine carries for 54 yards and two TDs and completed four of nine passes for 62 yards.

*** Schurr turned the ball over twice – both fumbles. El Monte had one fumble to go along with the three picks.

*** El Monte, 0-2, has allowed 86 points in two games. Schurr improved to 1-1.
