(El Monte) – Casey Romero scored 32 points to lead El Monte to a 78-35 rout of Geffen Academy Wednesday night in the first round of the CIF Division 5AA playoffs in the Lions Den.
Romero hit three three pointers and scored 17 points in the first quarter alone as the Lions jumped out to a 25-13 lead. Romero nailed six threes overall.
El Monte continued to pour it on in the second quarter lighting it up for another 27 points and outscoring the Geffens 27-11 in the quarter to take a 52-24 lead at the half. Sometimes when someone says ‘It was over by halftime” it’s usually an exaggeration. Well this was no exaggeration. It was indeed over by halftime.
Geffen Academy managed only five points in the third quarter and the Lions were up 72-29 after three before emptying the bench in the fourth quarter.
Josh Penunuri joined Romero in double figures for El Monte with 22 including a pair of threes. Penunuri had ten points in the Lions big second quarter. The two combined for 54 of the team’s 78 points. Yahir Martinez added nine.
For Geffen Academy Nolan Wang led the team with 14 points while Cypress Ohebsron was also in doubles with 11. Geffen Academy was a surprise entry into the post season as they were winless on the season. They finished 0-6 overall.
The Lions, 10-3 overall, march into the second round.
