Chargers Offense Falls Short, 16-3

(Inglewood) – The Chargers were held out of the end zone and managed just one field goal in a 16-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks Saturday at SoFi Stadium in the first exhibition game of the 2024 season.

The Chargers offense struggled throughout the contest. They only managed a 58-yard field goal by Cameron Dicker “The Kicker” late in the first half. Justin Herbert is out with a plantar fascia injury but is expected to be back by opening day. Easton Stick was at quarterback followed by Max Duggan and Luis Perez.     

After a scoreless first quarter Seattle broke through early in the second quarter. They drove 59 yards on 12 plays. Sam Howell capped it with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Brady Russell for a 7-0 lead.

On the next possession Coby Bryant (cool name) picked off Stick and returned it to the Chargers 21-yard line. George Holani cashed in on the turnover with an 11-yard touchdown jaunt to put the Seahawks up 13-0 with 11:01 left in the second quarter.

Dicker booted a 58-yard field goal later in the second quarter to get the Chargers on the board. 

The Seahawks took a 13-3 lead into the halftime break. 

The Chargers defense came up big stopping the Seahawks on the one-yard line on fourth and goal with 6:45 left in the third quarter. Holani was stuffed and pushed back a yard to keep the score at 13-3.

Max Duggan replaced Stick for the Chargers in the third quarter but the offense still had trouble getting on track.  

The Seahawks maintained the 10-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.  

Jason Meyers split the uprights from 48 yards out with 4:41 left in the fourth quarter to extend Seattle’s lead to 16-3.

Perez took over for Duggan in the fourth quarter. The Seahawks held off the Chargers the rest of the way to secure the victory. 

The Chargers had just 198 total tards on offense including only 77 rushing. Stick completed 5 of 13 for 31 yards and an interception. Jaret Patterson had 7 carries for 38 yards. For Seattle Howell was 16 of 27 for 130 yards and a touchdown. 

Next up for the Chargers is matchup with the Rams next Saturday at SoFi Stadium.
