Sweet Sixteen for Monrovia

(Montebello) – Julian Cardenas (21) and Madden Caudillo (19) combined for 40 points to lead Monrovia to a 58-40 win over Montebello Monday night at Montebello. With the victory the Wildcats remained red hot as they improved to 16-0 on the season.

Monrovia led by six at halftime and then broke it open in the second half. The Wildcats went on an 8-0 run start the third quarter as Cardenas hit three buckets inside and Caudillo hit a pair of free throws. Cardenas scored nine points in the third and Monrovia held Montebello to just four points in the quarter outscoring the Oilers 11-4.

Cardenas continued his hot shooting in the fourth with eight points as Monrovia won the final frame 15-10 and rolled to the 18-point victory.

Montebello stayed with Monrovia early. Aden Munoz scored six points for the Oilers and Joseph Torres had five in the first as Montebello ended the quarter down by just three at 14-11. Caudillo knocked down a couple of deep threes for the Wildcats.

Monrovia stated fast in the second quarter racing out on a 9-2 run to go up 23-13. Caudillo had big quarter to set the pace for Monrovia with another bomb from beyond the arc and scored nine points. Munoz was able to keep the Oilers close with nine second quarter points of his own as Montebello climbed back in it to make it 32-26 at the half.

The Wildcats then pulled away in the third and secured the victory. Although Caudillo and Cardenas carried the night for the Cats, Joseph Banuelos also contributed seven points and Damon Simmons hit two threes for six.

For Montebello Munoz led the way with 20 points and Torres was also in double figures with 11 but it wasn’t enough.

Monrovia, still perfect on the year, will begin Rio Hondo League play Wednesday at Blair. Montebello dropped to 8-9 and will host Keppel Wednesday in Almont League play.
