(“The TEN” is not a top ten but ten items worth being included in “The TEN”) (1-8: Remembering Davey Lopes).

  1. Former Dodgers great Davey Lopes, who was a member of the record setting infield of the 1970’s and 80’s, passed away Wednesday at the age of 80.
  2. Lopes, who played second base for the Dodgers, along with third baseman Ron Cey, shortstop Bill Russell and first baseman Steve Garvey, started together in the infield for eight 1/2 consecutive seasons beginning in 1973.
  3. Lopes stole 418 bases as a Dodger, second-highest career total in franchise history behind Maury Wills (490). Lopes holds the franchise record with an 83.1% career success rate (minimum 100 steals).
  4. Lopes didn’t make his MLB debut until he was 27 and spent 10 years with the Dodgers. He played in four World Series and won a championship in 1981. He holds the franchise record for most games played at second base with 1,134. In 1978 Lopes hit two home runs in Game 1 of the World Series against the New York Yankees.
  5. In 1975 Lopes recorded a then-MLB-record of 38 consecutive steals without being caught. He led the NL in steals that year with 77.
  6. After leaving the Dodgers, he played for the Oakland A’s (1982-84), Chicago Cubs (1984-86) and Houston Astros (1986-87). He stole 557 career bases – 26th in MLB history – and hit .263 in 1,812 regular-season games with 155 home runs, 614 RBIs, 232 doubles and 50 triples.
  7. After his playing days, Lopes managed the Milwaukee Brewers from 2000-02. He coached with the Baltimore Orioles, San Diego Padres, Washington Nationals, Philadelphia Phillies and the Dodgers (2011-2015).
  8. Lopes made his MLB debut on September 22, 1972. He retired after the 1987 season. ******************
  9. George Soler and Reynaldo Lopez have each been suspended for seven games and received an undisclosed fine following the brawl between the Angels and the Atlanta Braves Tuesday night.
  10. Former Lakers star Michael Cooper is set to become the head basketball coach at Cal State LA. Cooper has been the associate head coach at Cal State LA for the last three seasons.
