Spartans’ Fourth Quarter is Moor Than Enough

Abraham Gonzalez turns the corner for the Spartans

(Alhambra) The Schurr Spartans started slow then hit the gas and scored 28 fourth quarter points en route to a 44-13 victory over the Alhambra Moors Friday night at Moor Field.

The point barrage included touchdowns on a pass from Aaron Cantu to Matthew Contreras of 28-yards, and runs of five, 12 and six yards by Abraham Gonzalez and Bradley Powell. The last two both from Powell.

The Spartans didn’t take long to get on the board as they needed only four plays to go 62-yards and a touchdown on their first drive of the game. The drive was highlighted by a 48-yard strike to Chris Chairomonte from Cantu. The big gain was Schurr’s first play from scrimmage. The extra point from Gustavo Tlatebchi was blocked but the Spartans had the early lead.

The Moors answered back with a touchdown of their own on the ensuing drive. With 2:37 left to play in the first period, Patrick Bruno found the endzone on a three yard run. Jonathan Bird hit the extra point and Alhambra had the lead.

Schurr found traction for a seven play 70-yard drive eating up a good portion of the second quarter. The Cantu to Chairomonte connection was good this time for 30-yards over the middle to paydirt and the Spartans regained the lead 13-7.

As time wound down in the first half, a 57-yard drive by Schurr stalled at the Moor four. Tlatebchi trotted onto the field and booted a 21-yard field goal to extend the Spartan lead to nine as the teams headed to the locker room.

Encouraged by HC Ben Negrete’s charge to finish the second half strong. The Spartans did just that limiting the Moor offensive attack to one lone touchdown on a four yard run by Joshua Mendoza. The score came with 3:20 left to play in the third stanza.

The Schurr defense was especially stout in the second half and combined with the strong showing in the first half limited the Alhambra offense to 178-yards of total offense.

Aided by the fourth quarter outburst, the Spartan offense amassed 470-yards led by Cantu passing for 214 and three scores, Gonzalez rushing for 135 and a score and Powell gaining 75 and two scores.

The Moors will try to get back on track next week as the host the Montebello Oilers while Schurr returns home for the homecoming festivities taking on Mark Keppel.
