Thomas Terrific for Northview

Northview listens to Coach Marcel Perez after win over Nogales

(Covina District Field) – Marquise Thomas ran for 181 yards and three touchdowns to lead Northview to a 41-14 rout of Nogales Thursday night in Valle Vista League action.

Thomas scored on a 14 yard run in the second quarter to cap an 80 yard drive. On the Vikings next series, Thomas busted off a 50 yard sprint to the end zone on the second play to give Northview a 13-7 lead.

Just before halftime Northview hit Nogales with a quick strike through the air. Raymond Hernandez connected with speedster Marcus Ellis on a 70 yard touchdown pass. Ellis got behind the Nogales secondary and nobody was within 15 yards of him as he raced to the end zone. Northview took the 20-7 lead into the half.

Nogales got on the board first late in the second quarter. The Nobles pieced together a 12 play 68 yard drive mainly on the legs of Patrick Miranda. Miranda capped it with a 15 yard scamper.

In the third Thomas went to work again. After a Nogales turnover the Vikes took over at the Noble 47. Thomas had runs of 8 and 14 yards as they moved down to the seven yard line. Thomas then hit the hole, did a spin move to avoid a tackler, and dashed into the zone for a 27-7 lead.

“We really got number 20 (Thomas) rolling tonight,” said Northview Coach Marcel Perez. “He’s a big part of our offense.

On the ensuing series, Nogales was faced with a fourth and eight at its own 12 yard line. To everybody’s surprise the Nobles went for it. The Northview defense however wasn’t fooled as they stuffed Miranda for a three yard loss back to the nine yard line.

Four plays later Hernandez snuck in from the one for a 34-7 lead and an early end to the ball game.

Late in the fourth Miranda got loose for the Nobles and broke off a 23 yard touchdown run.

But the Vikings quickly responded on the next possession as Josh Orona ran by the Nogales defense for 39 yards down to the five. He then finished it on the next play with a five yard run with 22 seconds left to round out the scoring.

Miranda was the bulk of the Nogales offense. He had 29 carries for 113 yards and two scores.

Hernandez completed passes for 84 yards for Northview. Both receptions were hauled in by Ellis.

With the victory Northview improves to 3-5 overall but 3-2 in the Valle Vista. The Vikes have only one league game left – Baldwin Park on November 12. They’ll need to win that one and then get some help.

“Our kids keep working and we’re trying to fight everyday,” Perez said. “We’ll see what happens with the other teams tomorrow night and go from there.”

Nogales fell to 1-7 and 0-4 in league.
