Chino Hills Makes History

By Matt Schuler

(Covina)- The Huskies could get used to this. Chino Hills came away with yet another Covina Christmas Tournament Championship, making it 4-in-a-row as they beat top seeded  Bonita 53-42 Thursday night and engraved a piece of  history in the Covina High School Gym.

The Huskies are the first team to win the annual ‘Doc’ Sooter Memorial Covina Christmas Tournament four consecutive years, topping Covina’s record three-peat from 61, 62, & 63.

AJ Hecox, the Huskies leader and go to guy, led all scorers with 15 points, Jon Richman added 12, and Warren Ondatje and Michael Sorenson hit clutch free throws to keep Chino on top late in the game.

Bearcats guard James Northup had an off night shooting the ball and finished with 7 points, making only 2 out of 18 attempts. Jordan Butler finished with 13 points and picking up the slack was Garrett Pendleton, who totaled 11 points and seven rebounds.

Trailing 45-41 with 1:34 to play in the final quarter, the Bearcats could not capitalize on a lay up opportunity and Hecox grabbed the rebound and went coast-to-coast for a lay in of his own to cushion the lead back to six.

Bonita and Chino Hills also played in last year’s Christmas Tournament, with this year being a sad case of déjà vu for the Bearcats and all too familiar for Chino Hills.
