Karavedas Goes to Maranatha

New Maranatha HC Peter Karavedas

(Pasadena) Maranatha has tabbed Whittier Christian defensive coordinator Peter Karavedas to be its next head football coach.

“This is truly an honor,” said Karavedas. “To be part of a program like Maranatha and where it is at right now. I’m looking forward with excitement to the future.”

Karavedas, who will immediately begin putting together a staff, was one of 80 applicants for the job vacated when long time HC Joel Murphy transitioned fully into a student ministries position on campus.

An alumnus of Azusa Pacific, Karavedas served as DC on two powerful Whittier Christian teams. The Heralds made the semifinals in 2009 and followed it with a finals appearance in 2010 led by defenders Jeff Worthy (Boise State), Rudy Robles, and George Flynn.

The Minuteman program, one of many searching for a new point man this off season, was highly coveted because the direction the school is headed and the presence of a D-1 caliber quarterback in Andrew Elfers.

Former HC Murphy, who resigned on January 11th, went 47-16 over five seasons. In 2010 Maranatha moved into the Olympic League and advanced to the second round of the Mid-Valley Division playoffs.

Maranatha High School Press Release:

It’s with great pride and excitement that Maranatha High School announces the hiring of Peter Karavedas as our new head football coach.

Coach Karavedas comes to Maranatha from Whittier Christian where he, as the Defensive Coordinator, helped lead the Heralds to the CIF championship game and a 12-2 overall record in the 2010 season. In his time as Defensive Coordinator, the Heralds have an overall record of 25-12 and have been to both the CIF Semi-Finals and CIF-Finals.

Peter brings an incredible passion for Christ and football that will infuse our community as our football program continues to grow.  Coach Karavedas has a great knowledge of the Olympic League, the Mid-Valley Division, and the Maranatha community.

Furthermore, Coach Karavedas understands and embraces the importance of football in a high school athlete’s development.  Most importantly Peter Karavedas understands the role that athletics can have on a young mans character as athletes seeks to learn who they are and what their purpose is.

Maranatha welcomes Coach Karavedas to the Minutemen family, and we are excited to see the impact he will have on our student body and the young men in the football program.
