Alhambra Wraps up First Spring Session

Alhambra Coach Lou Torres begins his second year on the job

(Alhambra) – Alhambra wrapped up its first two weeks of spring football Thursday with a passing competition with Franklin. The Moors will now take the next couple of weeks off before returning in the middle of June.

Junior QB Josh Mendoza has a year of experience under his belt

“It’s kind of a different schedule,” said Alhambra Coach Lou Torres. “Next week the kids have Finals and after that another week of school. So we’ll get back after it about the middle of June.”

The Moors finished 4-6 overall last year and 1-4 in the Almont in Torres’ first year. Torres chalks it up mostly to inexperience.

Running Down the Dream

“We were young last year and we’ll still be young this year. But now all of those sophomores we had are all juniors with a year of experience,” Torres said. “We have a lot of skill position players coming back but we might be a little light on the lines”

A few of the players Torres pointed out were quarterback Josh Mendoza, receiver Demetrius Russell and WR/DB Chris Gayton. The Moors open with Mt. View in zero week and then follow with La Canada, Temple City, Wilson and South Pasadena before starting Almont League play.

Also OL/DL Chris Caraveo and defensive back Luis Herrera will be key to the Moors success. Herrera is also the backup quarterback should Mendoza go down.

Young or not the Moors should compete. The Almont should be wide open with Schurr, Bell Gardens, Montebello and San Gabriel all losing key players.
