(El Monte)- “It has, I didn’t think it was going to go by this fast but it did,” says El Monte left tackle Jesse Gaytan.
The 6’3, 265-pounder (all muscle) is heading into his third season of varsity ball playing along the offensive line for the Lions.
“He is a great kid that has matured into a great young man,” said El Monte HC Joel Sanchez. “He’s big, physical, and plays on both sides of the ball.”
The recently elected team captain has some simple goals. Win the Mission Valley and the ‘lineman of the year” award for the league.
What has changed for him as a senior?
“When the younger guys start messing around, I put them straight,” said Gaytan who was all league in 2010. “Personally I want to play in college so I’m working quite a bit on my footwork. Just trying to get faster.”
Last fall Gaytan was part of an offensive line that helped running back Michael Jimenez to 1,813 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns. The greatest season ever for an EMHS ball carrier.
“With his experience and hard work in the classroom, field and weight room things will be good on the offensive line in Lion Country,” says Sanchez. “Jesse will lead our line to hopefully another 1,000 yard back this season.”
