Pasadena Builds Leads, Holds On

By Cory Kwok

(Sierra Madre)- Pasadena scored on its first three possessions, but needed to hold on for a 21-14 win over La Salle on Friday night in non-league play.

The win was Pasadena’s (1-2) first of 2011 as the Lancers (0-4) dropped their 15th straight.

Israel “Izzy” Lacy led La Salle on an opening 10-play 79 yard, 5:08 drive that he cap with a score from 12-out for an early 7-0 lead. Lacy led all rushers 102 yards and a score.

PHS, pinned on its own 15 after a botched double-reverse on the ensuing series’ first play, would claw to tie it with a 7-play 85 yards drive Cleo Bates finished when he punched it in from 3-yards out.

La Salle then went 3-and-out but Stephen Wright booted a nice punt that had the Bulldogs begin their next drive back at the 12.

But the 88 yard  distance didn’t faze PHS, as the journey featured a huge 54-yard connection by quarterback Brandon Cox to Riian Simpson. Cox hit paydirt six plays later with a 9-yard go-ahead strike to Marcus Green.

Riian Simpson finished with 6 receptions for 155 yards, including a 56-yarder that was called back because of an illegal block.

Pasadena forced another 3-and-out but again dialed long distance in 11 plays, 90 yards. Cox scrambled for 18 yards and was 4 of 4 this episode including a 24-yard houser to Keith Law to stretch he Bulldog lead to 21-7.

La Salle returned from halftime proliferating their own momentum and recovered a Bulldog fumble at the 14. Three plays later, Kyle Lewis shook loose through a seam for a 12-yard touchdown run, trimming Pasadena’s cushion to 21-14 just 1:21 into the third. It proved to be the last score of the night.

Lancers starting quarterback Jalen Gray was knocked out and taken away by ambulance after sustaining a major back of helmet hit late in the fourth that delayed the contest for over 1/2 hour.

The first half was smothered in yellow flags all over as both teams were cited for a combined 16 penalties (9 of those major) for 166 yards. In the end, there were 26 for a total of 261 yards.
