Heavy Medel in Arcadia

Medel continued his impressive streak

(Arcadia) – The ghosts of playoffs past have been exorcised from Salter Stadium on Friday night as Arcadia dominated in its opening round of the Southeast Division playoffs with a 39-13 victory over Bonita.

The Apaches knocked out last year’s finalist with a balance attack as Jake Medel rushed for 145 yards on the ground on 25 carries and scored twice.

Medel’s 47-yard touchdown run with 4:57 remaining in the third quarter all but sealed the Bearcats fate as they fell behind by 17 points.

Myles Carr closed out the night 21 of 32 for 180 yards and two touchdowns. Both of Carr’s touchdowns came in the second quarter.

Arcadia took a 16-point lead into the half after Carr found Robbie Haines on a 11 yard screen play. Haines did the rest avoiding tacklers to get into the end zone.

As the second half began, Bonita found some renewed life after Toure McCulley returned the opening kick to the Arcadia 47-yard line. It was the second time that McCulley electrified the Bearcats faithful with a kick return.

Four plays later after McCulley’s kick-off return, Bonita cut the deficit to 10 points as Cam Griffin found the end zone.

Griffin finished the night with 137 yards and two touchdowns.

The Bearcats never challenged for the lead the remainder of the night as the Apache defense came up big sacking Tanner Diebold five times. Clarence Irvin accounted for two of those sacks.

After a safety extended its lead to 26 points, Arcadia’s Myles Carr scored early in the fourth quarter to put the game away for good.

The anticipated match-up of Garrett Horine and Taylor Lagace never materialized as Horine was playing Safety and only once did the two stars clash on the field.

Lagace went over the middle on a pass that was thrown low and Horine and Lagace collided near the endzone with Lagace’s helmet came flying off. Neither player was injured.

The win sets up a match-up between La Mirada and Arcadia to be held at Salter Stadium next Friday.
