Game Night Mid-Valley Division Quarterfinal: San Gabriel-Arroyo

Brian Lopez and the Mats march into B.L. Bergstrom Friday night

Friday November 25

Kick off 7:30 PM (Plan for 7:00 PM)

San Gabriel (7-4) at Arroyo (10-1)

Last Meeting: 11/21/03: San Gabriel 44-10: Division VII CIF Playoffs First Round

Six weeks ago this game would have looked like Arroyo in a rout. But since then the Matadors have won six straight, an Almont League championship and a first round playoff game. We knew the offense could be explosive (69 points vs. Alhambra, 48 vs. Montebello) but now the defense is lights out too. Carlos Purser is a monster – just ask Maranatha.

Arroyo has lost only once all year and showed some resiliency in wins over Rosemead and El Monte. For the Knights it’s the Rivera factor. Steven Rivera, a four year starter, doesn’t let his team lose. The quarterback has answered all the questions about why he plays defense also. Without him on that side of the ball Arroyo might have at least three losses.

Who’s going to win? I don’t know how about drawing straws? Since we can’t do that I’ll go with San Gabriel. If the Mats’ defense shut out Andrew Elffers, Darien McGee and company can’t they do enough to beat Arroyo? If not what I meant to say is Rivera is just too much.
