54th Annual Arroyo Invitational Tournament: Day Two

By Corey Kowk

Day 2 of 3, Pool Play/Round Robin

Wilson 46, Alta Loma 36

Wilson erupted from the opening tip and shot 8 for 13 to blaze ahead 20-2 at the end of one stanza, but needed to survive its own scoring slump, an Alta Loma rally, and a scoreless third quarter before winning 46-36.

Matthew Ng led the Wildcats with 15 points and 5 boards. Ryan Del Rosario did all the other dirty work for Wilson, posting 8 points, dishing five first half assists, hitting a pair of threes and also adding four steals. Adom Jacko, a senior and three year starter for Alta Loma, topped all scorers with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Yusef Shelton was next with 9 points and 7 caroms.

Keppel 51, South El Monte 40

The Aztecs extended a 12-2 run into the fourth to extend their lead to 20, which was more than enough insurance to keep South El Monte at bay and score a 51-40 win. South spotted Keppel a 21-8 lead after one and did itself no favors by committing 15 turnovers in the first half. Despite all that, neither team could consistently hit shots nor capitalize during the second period as both combined for a paltry four field goals.

Garrett Jong had a game high 12 points with 9 rebounds and led an Aztec-trilateral that posted double-digits scoring that was rounded out by Matthew Low (5 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal) and Adam Thompson (5 rebounds), as both scored 10. Cameron Wong went 3 for 3 (7 points) in the first quarter and ended up with 9 points, 4 steals.

Jordan Villela and Ishmael Escamilla, nephew of former SEM football coach Erick Escamilla, both scored 8 to lead the Southmen.

Bishop Amat 52, La Puente 43

La Puente looked as if it turned a full 180 from Monday’s thumping at the hands of Montclair, converting on numerous big plays and shots to stay within striking distance of Bishop Amat. With 2:00 to go, Ruben Moran (12 points) sank two free throws and, off an Amat turnover 21 seconds later, followed up with a huge 3-pointer to pull the Warriors within three (46-43), but thereafter were shut out by the Lancers.

‘Amat surfaced with huge plays of its own, led by an impressive fourth quarter performance from Nate Burchardt. Burchardt had the clinching rebound, an assist, steal, and block in that period, also making a three point play with 44.4 left while adding another free throw moments later before finishing with 17 points. Monrovia native Joseph Cook made his presence felt by making emphatic shot-blocks in the second and third quarters.

La Salle 53, Arroyo 31

Through the sharp efforts of Jordan Hill, Conor Williams, and Jeff Briegel, with sharp second-and-third chance rebounding hustle from Taft Hulsey, La Salle dictated the pace throughout and rolled to an easy 53-31 victory over tournament host Arroyo.

Primi Gomez single handedly tried to keep Arroyo in contention early, scoring 9 of the team’s 11 second quarter points before ending up with a game high 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Knights.

The Lancers dialed in 11-2 runs on three separate occasions in the game to maintain their stranglehold. They pulled key starters (Hill, Briegel, Williams) shortly before the fourth as the bench got on the floor in the fourth quarter. Hill (19 points) amassed 10 points, 4 assists, and 4 steals with a block in a solid first half. Briegel (7 points, 5 rebounds) came through with two nice blocks.

Not to be overshadowed was Izzy Lacy’s second half highlight reel as the junior guard vaulted off the bench to creatively maneuver his way to 6 points (3-4 FG) while also getting three rebounds, an assist, and two steals.
