Wednesday December 14

La Canada 59 Arcadia 45

Jay Srinivasan hit 5 of his first 6 threes, and his 15 points was tops amongst all La Canada scorers as the Spartans thwarted Arcadia for the second time this season to remain pool-play perfect in their own Holiday Classic.

Post colossus Conner Boyd (13 points) was dispatched to full duty in the second half where he recorded 10 rebounds, a steal, block, and 11 points. Jack Anderson chimed in three dimes and scored 11, including his first career trey.

High scoring forward Darrell Dansby added 12 and also grabbed 4 boards, and had 2 assists/steals, and a block. Ryan Lee had a tremendous effect on the Spartans’ offensive out put by dishing out six assists.

Taylor Lagace yanked in 7 rebounds and led the game with 17 points for Arcadia. Stephen Smith (9 points, 3 assists, 1 block) and Robby Haines (9 points, 4 rebounds, 2 rebounds, 2 assists) both registered 9. Haines’ best bucket of the night came via a rim-jamming putback in the third quarter. Jeff Radzwill struggled and managed only four second half points. Kevin Gill scored once and posted a pair of assists in the second half.

Highlights from the other games:

Muir 78 Schurr 35

Muir dictated the tempo from the opening tip and cruised past Schurr 78-35 in another dominating performance. The Mustangs are off to an impressive 6-0 start which is the best in Muir alum Dr. Gamal Smalley’s now-four seasons at the helm. The Stangs now have a mammoth matchup vs. La Canada on Friday night at the Spartans “Sports Center” for a berth into the tournament championship, to be played Saturday night at 7:30 pm.

Nine Mustangs were penciled for at least five points. Andre Frazier (12) and Jelani Mitchell (13) led the brigade, both pouring in double-digits in the first half before getting scant reps in the second one as Muir’s lead grew lopsided. Deron Wilson (12) splashed a pair of freebies in the second before leaping off the bench in the fourth to drain two threes and add 10 points during the last stanza. Muir finished a crisp 16 for 22 at the charity stripe.

Saugus 56 Bonita 47

Saugus was physically taxing on defense and held a potent Bonita squad in check early to its lowest first first half point total (15) in nearly six years (Bonita scored 15 in first half on February 9th 2006 vs. Wilson of Hacienda Heights) and buried five treys in the opening stanza before holding steady throughout to clip Bonita 56-47.

Bonita mounted a mild counter strike over the last three frames as Brandon Ko, Jeff Nelson, and Garrett Horine all pitched in 10, 9, and 8 points, respectively, for the Bearcats. Tony Digirolamo attacked the paint and led Bonita with twelve.

Jeremy Gatewood tossed up spurts of eight in the second and third before finishing with a game high 20 points to drive the Centurions.

St Francis 65 Glendale 48

St. Francis’ electric scoring machine Emerson Castaneda had a quiet 27 points including 4 threes, helping pilot the Golden Knights past Glendale 65-43. The Nitros were without standout power forward David Yetenikyan who went down Tuesday night after an awkward landing when he accidentally stepped on a basketball. Yetenikyan is expected to return to action by the end of next week.

Sevan Pogosyan led Glendale with 19 points. Aram Ohanian, Bobby Casaburi, Vahe Aristakessian, and Steven Arakelyan all joined Pogosyan in the three point club.
