Eagles Soar in Overtime

(San Gabriel) – Tyler Shimamoto scored 27 points including a game tying runner at the regulation buzzer to lead Gabrielino to a 53-50 overtime win over Mt. View Friday night in a key Mission Valley League contest.

Shimamoto’s bucket in the lane as the horn sounded tied it at 46 and the Eagles outscored Mt. View 7-4 in the OT to win it. Jose Ojeda’s three pointer hit the rim but fell off as the clock hit zeroes touching off the Eagles’ celebration.

Gabrielino improved to 6-0 in league with the win and is in sole possession of first place in the MVL.  

Shimamoto got off to a fast start with 10 of the Eagles’ 13 first quarter points. Elijah Morales hit a pair of threes in the first quarter and Jonathan Zepeda had a couple of buckets for View in the second but Shimamoto hit a three and scored five in the second as the Eagles led 24-19 at the half.   

The Vikings held Gabrielino to just five points in the third quarter and forged a 29-29 tie after three.

Both teams had trouble from the free throw line in the final quarter. Mt. View was five of 12 from the stripe and the Eagles were 10 of 16.

Mt. View appeared to be in good shape when Tony Munoz hit two free throws with seven seconds left for a 46-44 lead, but Shimamoto then drove the lane and tied it as the buzzer sounded.

Elijah Peters was the only other Eagle in double figures with 13. Cameryn Matthews added 7. Morales led the Vikes with 15 and Ojeda chipped in 13.  

Mt. View fell to 3-3 in league.
