“The Dude” Signs With the Highlands

Vinny "The Dude" Venegas

(Covina) – Vinny Venegas, Covina’a all purpose star, has signed to play football for New Mexico Highlands, Covina AD Darryl Thomas confirmed Tuesday.

“He signed yesterday. I’m sure he’ll be successful. He’s a great kid,” Thomas said.

Venegas was instrumental in the Colts’ success the last two years playing wide receiver, defensive back, returning punts and wherever else Thomas inserted him. He helped Covina advance to the Mid-Valley Division  semi finals last year where the Colts fell to eventual champ Monrovia.

Referenced as “The Dude” by Thomas, Venegas made his varsity debut as a freshman in November of 2008 in the CIF playoffs against Azusa and recorded a tackle. Over the next three seasons he compiled  227 carries for 1,358 rushing yards and 31 touchdowns. He caught 128 passes for 2,117 receiving yards and 23 touchdowns. From his defensive back position he recorded 209 tackles, 11 interceptions, and three sacks.

Combined he accounted for 3,475 yards rushing and receiving and a total of 58 touchdowns.
