Apaches Head Coach Jon Dimalante has stepped down. More to follow.

“It was time,” said Dimalante “I wouldn’t trade the last 16 or 17 years for anyting. It was all positive.”

Dimalante leaves the Apaches program as the school’s all time leader in wins with a record of 114-75-1 in 17 seasons to go with 14 post season appearances.

“The community has been great to me the school, the young men have been great, I couldn’t have asked for anything better. And this is going to be a good football team next year.”

Dimalante, who will continue to teach at the school, did not site fatigue or family concerns as his reason for stepping down but only that his time had come.

“I can tell you sometimes you get closer to the start of the next season and your just back from spring break it hits you,” said one former local coach who insisted on not being mentioned so as not take anything away from Dimalante. “Jon is a great guy and I know he’s interested in his family and furthering his education. Coaching football is a hard job these days, especially with all the changes. Few or no assistants on campus to help carry the load, the relaxing of the old association rule makes for a heavy load.”

“I won’t presume to even speculate on who my replacement will be,” said Dimalante who succeeded Doug Smith after the 1994 season. “I do know they will be getting a good team and good people.”
