Lady Aztecs Take Advantage in Key Almont Win

By Corey Kwok

(Alhambra) – Alashanee Medina delivered a complete game three hit shutout with no walks while strking out 13 batters and also went two for three at the plate to lead Keppel to a 2-0 win over Alhambra in a a key Almont league contest Thursday.

The two runs Keppel scored in the fourth almost didn’t happen at all, had it not been for some miscues.

Karen Liang popped a single to right and stole her way to third to lead off the Lady Aztecs. Afterwards, with one out, Brianna Jimenez was hit by a pitch and then stole second.

Sammie Mendez then hit a low liner that was caught by Lady Moor shortstop Angela Provencio, who appeared to have a double play at second but it was mishandled at the end, sending the ball to shallow left and allowing Lieng to coast home.

Jimenez took flight as well and beat the throw at third before breezing to the plate as that play missed its target also.

Alhambra’s leadoff batters got on and reached third in the fourth and sixth innings but were cut off on groundout plays by Medina and Vanessa Mendez, with a pair of Medina strikeouts preceding them.

Keppel improved to 12-2 overall and is one game back  (3-1) of league leader Schurr (4-0). Alhambra fell to 9-5 on the year and 2-2 in league.
