San Gabriel’s Mikal Quintanilla (# 1) will start the opening game at quarterback
(San Gabriel) – San Gabriel has named Temple City transfer Mikal Quintanilla the starting quarterback for the opening game against Animo Friday night.
“We have decided to start Quintanilla for the first game,” said San Gabriel Coach Jude Oliva. “He has played well and has earned the job.”
Quintanilla, a senior, has been in a battle for the starting job with junior Marqus Valenzuela during the summer. Quintanilla started for Temple City last year.
53-0 Good game Mikal.
Some obserations on the TC/Maranatha scrimmage –
#13 from Maranatha has the body style of a modern NFL receiver and looks to have huge potential. The Maranatha kids looked loose and well conditioned.
The average age of the refs looked to be about 85.
The Rams have the smallest defensive line I have ever seen at TC. That said, overall I thought the group showed good aggression and tackled fairly well for a first opponent kind of match up.
Macs new offensive scheme showed a bunch of misdirection and inside the tackles running, with some option tosses thrown in. The Rams ran probably 20 run plays before putting up a pass (fine by me) and had decent success on the ground.
The QB looks like he grew some from last year, both in size and his ability to lead the offense. If we are able to keep this kid from 3rd and long all night – he should be OK.
Though it is only 1 game and a scrimmage at that – the most promising thing I saw was TC was able to pressure the passer at times (mostly from DE positions) and closed well on thrown balls. Maranatha’s QB is a stud and threw impressively. Early on, the Ram secondary looked pretty good, preventing the big play and not getting lost in coverage. Overall that is a big improvement from last year, when TC gave 15 yard cushions off the line of scrimmage and sat back to watch completion after completion. To me, this looks like a fundamental change and the TC coaches deserve recognition for setting up these kids to hopefully be successful in defensive pass situations.
Reed looked angrier than usual and it cost him a couple flags. He clearly looks like the defensive leader and if he can motivate the D to mix it up, TC will have a better year than the horrid 1-9 debacle of last season. I counted 31 kids in green/gold plus the usual entourage of walking wounded. Not a big squad, but about average for TC nowadays.
Bonita, what exactly does that mean? SG and TC are in different leagues.
Smell a rat?
I would expect Quintinilla to be a great fit at San Gabriel. His throwing mechanics and accuracy improved at TC, but nobody throws well lying on your back or running for your life. Some of the bruising and losing he faced at TC, will make him a better player in the offensive sets SG uses.
