Game Night: Zero Week

Jake Payton and San Dimas ready for Bonita in the Smudgepot

All game times are 7 PM unless otherwise indicated

All teams are 0-0

Thursday August 23

San Dimas at Bonita (Citrus College)

Last Year: Bonita 40-20

Saints have a slew of backs. Don’t know if Bonita has the horses to stop them.

San Dimas 34- Bonita 20

Friday August 24

Alhambra at Mt. View

Last Year: Alhambra 47-7

The Moors lost some players but still have plenty returning. Mt. View looked good in the summer but this is a different ball game.

Alhambra 31 Mt. View 13

Rio Hondo Prep at Arcadia

First Meeting

A win-win game for Rio Hondo Prep. If the Kares win it’s the upset of the century. If they lose, well they were supposed to. All the pressure is on Arcadia. The Apaches win but RHP stays close.

Arcadia 24 Rio Hondo Prep 17

Ayala at Diamond Bar

Last Year: Ayala 32-23

Diamond Bar lost its quarterback as well as several skill position players. Ayala hails from the brutal Sierra League. The Bulldogs get it done.

Ayala 28 Diamond Bar 7

Baldwin Park at El Monte

Last Year: El Monte 43-17

This is the year of the Lion. Or at least that’s what a lot of people think. Quarterback Brandon Martinez is just one of many weapons that El Monte has on display. BP, although better than last year, still won’t be able to stay with the Lions.

El Monte 34 Baldwin Park 14

Arroyo at Los Altos

Maybe the most interesting game on the zero week docket. Arroyo facing life without Steven Rivera squares off against Los Altos, facing life without Shane Virnala, Justin Fa’aola and company. A win would be a big motivational boost for with side. Arroyo should have enough.

Arroyo 21 Los Altos 14

St. Paul at La Mirada

Last Year: St. Paul 24-7

We all know about La Mirada’s D-1 players but St. Paul has its share of talent too. And well yeah, there is Kurt Scoby. A lot has been made of both teams in the off season. It could come down to who makes the least mistakes in the fourth quarter. La Mirada gets it done.

La Mirada 24 St. Paul 21

Temple City at La Salle

Last Meeting 2009: La Salle 42-20

Both teams are coming off forgettable seasons. They combined for a record of 2-18. Both are hoping to get that first win out of the way early. La Salle holds off the Rams late.

La Salle 17 Temple City 14

Muir at Upland

The Mustangs lost a little too much and that’s just in transfers. Darick Holmes is at Oaks Christian and Denzel Talifero is at Duarte. Meanwhile Upland is coming off a 12-1 season and a semi final appearance.

Upland 41 Muir 13

West Covina at Covina – Covina District Field

Last Year: West Covina 26 Covina 20 OT

The last two games have been great this one won’t be. FOX should have televised this one last year.

West Covina 35 Covina 7

Quick Hits

Duarte at Marshall – Duarte 31-7

Garey at Pomona – Pomona 21-10

Wilson at Bosco Tech- Wilson 20-17

Rowland at Nogales- Rowland 28-14

Roosevelt at Montebello – Roosevelt 17-10

Animo at San Gabriel – San Gabriel 24-7

Bassett at Keppel- Bassett 28-7

TC may have a rough time with an improved La Salle offense that can both pass and run and outsizes the TC D line big time.
La Salle has some talent in skill positions and a better than usual linebacker corp this year.

Bonita lost more than San Dimas by a long shot. Diebold will be much improved, but no one with significant Friday Night Lights experience on the outside to throw to, but stats show funny thing… Bonita Spreads it but runs the ball 80% of time…?? Look for SD returning 8 plus impact transfers to stop Bonita Offense. If SD O-line can be effective, SD will score. My Bet — game will be won by Special Teams play which no one is takling about… punt return or Kick Off Return for TD is going to turn the tide for someone….

Bonita Alum is a good study.

Coach Z’s offense gets wings, so to speak, with backs like Barbone, Evans, Josephs, and Kohler. With the smaller guys, it is still effective in the Mid-Valley but not so much (tongue in cheek here) teams playing in higher divisions.

Even just the gutty little bearcats.

You picked the Saints last season as well…and what happened? Do they have a few 5’10 200LBers? Because no Kohler and Evans Types I don’t see it. The scat backs are ok, but they need the power backs to be effective.
