(La Puente)- La Puente recovered from an early setback and rolled to a 36-20 win over El Monte on Friday night.
The game started with a bang for the Lions. Rafael Espinoza picked off Warrior quarterback Garrett Hrey’s first pass and returned it 68-yards for the game’s opening touchdown. The crowd from La Puente went silent maybe thinking back to the disappointing 1-9 season in 2008.
Fears were quickly shaken on the ensuing drive as the Warriors covered a fast 55-yards and Hrey scored from a yard out to put LP up 7-6 and they never looked back.
La Puente’s rushing attack proved too much for El Monte to handle. Every single one of the Warriors five touchdowns came via the ground. That attack consisting of heavy hitting Jesus Vargas, and the quick dashing abilities of James Fernandez and Jose Perez racked up 316 yards of rushing on the evening.
The Lions didn’t give up coming out of the gates firing in the second half scoring their first offensive touchdown. Relying heavily on the rushing of Adrian Ramirez, who gained the bulk of his 115 yards in the third quarter, he went 46 yards on a counter to the right and a 16 yard touchdown rumble up the middle.
The victory improved La Puente to 2-0, while El Monte lost its first opener since 2002.
