(Whittier) – Six turnovers by California High resulted in scores as
Rowland held on for a 17-10 victory Friday night to
open both schools’ 2009 football season.

The Condors (0-1) turned the ball over six times, including two
interceptions of senior quarterback Eddie Artiga by Raiders junior
defensive back Leonardo Freeman that killed two potential scores.
Three of the four turnovers resulted in all of Rowland’s scores.

The Raiders (1-0) opened the scoring late in the first quarter after
Michael Saiz recovered a fumbled snap inside the Condors’ 30-yard
line.  Four plays later, kicker Henry Calistro hit a 32-yard field
goal
with 3:20 left in the first quarter, giving the Raiders an early
3-0 lead.

On the ensuing series, the Condors took almost five minutes to march
80 yards in 10 plays, culminating in a one-yard run by Terris Jones,
giving Cal their only lead of the night. On the next Cal series,
Dudley Gamino fumbled the ball after getting across mid-field, and the
Raiders not only recovered the ball but started their drive on the
Condors’ 30-yard line after a 15-yard personal foul.

Ball took seven plays to move the ball the 30 yards, setting up his
one-yard run to regain the lead 10-7, with 3:23 left in the half.
After getting the kick off at the 35-yard line, Artiga fumbled the
ball again as he was being chased and lineman Steven David scooped up
the ball and ran 25 yards for the score, 14 seconds after the previous
score.

The score would stay 17-7 until early in the fourth quarter after
Tyler Hadden hit a 26-yard field goal, closing the gap to 17-10,
however, Artiga threw his two interceptions in the second half,
ruining the Condors’ opportunities to tie the score.

California had 209 yards in total offense, with Artiga throwing only
seven completions in 17 attempts for 89 yards, but threw two costly
interceptions. Gamino was the leading rusher with eight carries for 39
yards, but both Jones and Kevin Attanasio were right behind Gamino int
he rushing stats, with Jones carrying 10 times for 37 yards and
Attanasio carrying seven times for 35 yards.
