Week One Roundups

MID-VALLEY DIVISION:

Chino 42, Pomona 0

The Cowboys (1-1, 0-0) bounced back from their Week Zero loss to Diamond Ranch by shutting out the Red Devils (0-2, 0-0), making them winless in their two games against the Mt. Baldy league.

J.C. Carradine rushed for 111 yards and two scores for the Cowboys, Jonathan Lazard added 77 yards and a touchdown. The Cowboy defense held the Red Devils’ offense to under 100 yards.

Marshall 34, Blair 14

A dozen penalties stymied a potential comeback by the Vikings (0-2, 0-0) as the Eagles (1-1, 0-0) claimed their first victory since 2005 in the “110-210 Rivalry” Friday night at Muir High, resuming after a five-year hiatus.

Jayjon Moore led the Vikings with 154 yards on 13 carries, including a 52-yard touchdown late in the second quarter that broke a 24-0 Eagles lead. De’Angelo Swinney hit on all five passes he attempted for 64 yards, throwing one touchdown and scoring a 17-yard touchdown in the first half.

 

South Hills 14, Bonita 0

The Bearcats (0-2, 0-0) continued their slide as The Huskies (2-0, 0-0) needed only 16 seconds to score all the points they needed Friday night at Glenn Davis Stadium.

In the third quarter, Huskies quarterback Adam Gross connected with Matt Boragine for a seven-yard touchdown. Two plays after a touchback put the ball on the Bearcats 20, Bearcats quarterback Tanner Diebold was intercepted by Aaron Parham who returned the ball 27 yards for the touchdown.

The Bearcats threatened a field goal late in the game, but the 42-yard attempt was blocked by the Huskies to hold on to the shutout victory.

 

Rowland 15, Wilson 13

The Raiders (2-0, 0-0) continued their run through the Valle Vista league with a win over the Wildcats (1-1, 0-0) in the last two minutes of the game.

Although the Raiders led, 9-6, late in the game, the Wildcats, who had taken a 6-0 lead at halftime, retook the lead with 2:52 left in the game when Josh Logan ran for a 10-yard score, putting the Wildcats up 13-9.

However, on the ensuing possession, the Raiders’ Terrell Brooks caught quarterback George Campos’ pass and ran it in for a 26-yard score with 1:32 left. The Wildcats had one last chance to win but Julio Bedolla intercepted Wildcat quarterback Philip Mendoza with 20 seconds left to seal the victory.

 

Alemany 49, Muir 12

A 46-0 halftime lead typified the victory by the Warriors (2-0, 0-0) as the Mustangs couldn’t score until their first possession of the third quarter, a 39-yard pass from Josh Muema to Mason Taeon.

Alemany took a 27-0 lead after the first quarter, thanks in part to touchdowns by Deshone Randall and Steven Mitchell, who each scored three times in the game. Randall scored on the third play of the game with an eight-yard run.

Alemany quarterback Devon Dunn played only in the first half, but completed nine passes for 239 yards and threw four touchdowns. Muema hit on 13 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown and scored Muir’s second score of the game on a one-yard run.

 

La Salle 45, Glendale 16

The Lancers (2-0, 0-0) have done something not seen at the school in years, stringing together two straight wins as they blew up the Nitros Friday night at La Salle.

Austin Wallis scored for the Lancers on a 29-yard keeper with just over seven minutes left in the first quarter, while Israel Lacy scored from 22 yards out with a minute left in the quarter. The Lancer defense held the Nitros to only two yards of offense in the quarter.

Although the Nitros got on the board in the second quarter on quarterback Michael Davis’ 88-yard run, the Lancers’ Emir Evans responded by returning a punt 78 yards. The Lancers would score two more times before heading into the half leading 32-9.

 

Sierra Canyon 34, El Camino Real 20

The Trailblazers (2-0, 0-0) extended their winning streak to 17 games, stretching back to last year, as they knocked off the perennial Division I Coty Section contenders Friday night at Granada Hills High.

Kieran Yancy set the tone for the game by taking the opening kickoff from the Conquistadores (1-1, 0-0) and returned the ball 92 yards for the first score of the game. Xavier Menifield scored three touchdowns as part of his 104 rushing yards and one of the four passes he caught contributed a fourth score.

 

SOUTHEAST DIVISION:

 

Los Alamitos 29, Paramount 26

The Pirates (0-1, 0-0) could not hold on to a 26-22 lead over the Griffins (1-0, 0-0) as both teams opened their seasons Friday night at the Pirate’s Lair.

Los Alamitos quarterback Cody Marshall put the Griffins into the lead for good with a 29-yard touchdown run with 3:20 left in the game. The score culminated a four-score exchange of the lead between both schools in the second half. Marshall’s score was his third rushing touchdown of the game for the Griffins, he also threw a touchdown.

The Pirates trailed 15-7 at halftime before taking the lead on two fumble returns in the third, giving the Pirates a 20-15 lead in the third.

 

Bellflower 27, Pacifica 22

The Buccaneers (1-1, 0-0) got three touchdowns from Ryan Hunley as they knocked off the Mariners (0-1, 0-0) at Ron Yary Stadium.

Hunley rushed for 216 yards on 28 carries, including an 80-yard run that put the Buccaneers up with six minutes to play in the game. The Mariners blew five straight possessions by turning the ball over to the Buccaneers, two of which resulted in touchdowns for Hunley.

 

Diamond Ranch 56, El Rancho 34

The Panthers scored on all six of their possessions in the first half and held on to beat the Dons (1-1, 0-0) Friday night at Dons Memorial Stadium.

Despite a 14-14 score at the end of the first, the Panthers outscored the Dons 28-13 in the second and took a 42-27 lead into the half. The Dons closed to within eight points in the third on a three-yard run by Dons quarterback Joey Sanchez. But Allen Salguero scored on the ensuing possession for the Panthers.

 

NORTHWEST DIVISION

 

Valley Christian 42, Duarte 36

Despite scoring four straight touchdowns in the first half, including two in the final 40 seconds of the first half, the Crusaders (1-0, 0-0) nearly allowed the Falcons (1-1, 0-0) to get back into the game as they scored 24 points in the fourth quarter.

Crusaders quarterback Patrick Avila went 17 for 27, passing for 275 yards and six touchdowns in the victory. Avila hit Clayton Granch twice in the second quarter and Brandon Bynum twice in the third.

 

Don Lugo 36, Maranatha 14

The Minutemen (0-2, 0-0) suffered as quarterback Andrew Elffers threw five interceptions as the Conquistadores (1-1, 0-0) rebounded from last week’s loss to Walnut Friday night at Don Lugo.

Don Lugo had a 12-7 lead at halftime but scored twice in the third to take a 29-7 lead.
