Northview Takes Home Crosstown Rivalry Crown

By Matt Schuler

(Covina)-Javon Taylor’s 168 yards rushing on 21 carries and a touchdown with 5:40 to play in the fourth sealed the deal in Northview’s 14-6 league opening victory over Covina at Covina District Field Friday night.

Besides bragging rights, The win also came with the cross town rivalry trophy, which has become an annual slugfest between these two neighboring schools.

Taylor, whose touchdown put the vikings up 14-0 late in the fourth, was the workhorse on the ground and reason why Northview was able to consistently move the chains.

“The kid is special,” said Viking head coach Marcel Perez. “Just keep feeding him the ball and good things are going to happen.”

Victor J. Garcia accounted for the other rushing touchdown and made plays when he needed to. Despite throwing two picks, the quarterback rallied his offense time and again and Garcia ran into the end zone just before half and the score was 7-0 with 1:02 in the second.

Covina, which recently came off outstanding performances against El Monte, didn’t get going till late in the game and by the time they did; it was too late.

Quarterback Emilio Zertuche found Christian Padilla for a 10-yard strike in the end zone and the gap was down to 14-6 after the 2-point conversion attempt was stuffed by the stingy Viking defense.

The score was set up by a 68 yd kick return by Michael Peters.

The Colts had an 18-play drive turned over on downs at the seven that summed up the troubles that the Colts had the entire night.

Northview (3-2) plays Pomona next week and Covina (3-2) takes on Wilson
