Week 8 Round-ups: Northwest Division

DEL REY
La Salle 29, Bishop Montgomery 10

The Lancers (8-0, 3-0) claimed sole possession of first place in the Del Rey League as they held off the Knights (6-2, 3-1) Friday night at Bishop Montgomery.

The Lancer defense stymied Knights quarterback Louie Soto, allowing him only six completions of 39 attempts for only 93 yards. Soto was sacks five times for losses of 33 yards and intercepted twice. He was also called for intentional grounding in the end zone, giving the Lancers the first of two safeties in the game.

Mary Star of the Sea 21, Bosco Tech 14

The Stars (3-5, 3-2) clinched a spot in the CIF Southern Section’s Northwest Division Playoffs as they handed  the Tigers (1-7, 1-3) their third straight loss in the Del Rey League Friday night at San Pedro High’s Daniels Field.

Jake Tedesco and Jeremy Atencio accounted for all three touchdowns for the Stars as they clinched their playoff spot on Homecoming. Tedesco’s first score and Atencio’s quarterback keeper gave the Stars a 14-0 lead before the Tigers got on the board. Tedesco would score again in the second half, giving the Stars a 21-7 lead.

Azusa 27, Gladstone 17

The Aztecs (5-3, 4-1) took advantage of the so-called “Gayle Anderson Jinx” as they upset the previously undefeated Gladiators (7-1, 4-1) to force a three-way tie atop the Montview Friday night at Citrus College.

The Aztecs got a one-yard touchdown from Angel Flores, an 84-yard passing score to Jesus Arteaga from quarterback Jose Ledesma and a 22-yard field goal from Ledesma for a 17-0 lead before the Gladiators got on the board with a 36-yard touchdown throw from Kevin Amezquita to Christian Arteaga and a two-point conversion, putting the Gladiators down 17-8 at halftime.

The Gladiators closed the gap to 17-11 early in the third but the Aztecs broke the game open as Ledesma threw a second touchdown, this time for 61 yards to Josh Dillon, putting the Aztecs up 24-11 and the rout was on. The Aztecs face La Puente in a first-place battle with the winner taking at least a share of the title, while Gladstone takes on Workman.

OLYMPIC

Valley Christian 35, Heritage Christian 14

The Crusaders (2-5, 1-1) got three touchdowns from Jonathon Nicholson as they moved into a three-way tie for second place in the Olympic League as they saddled the Knights (4-5, 0-3) with a third straight league loss Friday night at Valley Christian’s Crusader Stadium.

Brandon Bynum added two touchdowns in the victory as the Crusaders held the Knights scoreless until the fourth quarter. Nicholson rushed for 223 yards while Bynum added 111 yards in the victory. Valley Christian will head to Pasadena to play Maranatha in a match-up with playoff implications, while Heritage closes out it’s regular season next Saturday at home against Village Christian

PIONEER

North Torrance 35, El Segundo 7

The Saxons (6-2, 3-0) remained undefeated in Pioneer League play as they claimed sole possession of first place with their win over the Eagles (4-4, 2-1) Friday Night at the El Segundo Eagles’ Nest.

Devante Jenkins caught nine passes for 119 yards and three touchdowns, as Jenkins took advantage of the Eagles’ focus on fellow receiver Michael Jurado instead of him. Jurado caught six passes for 76-yards and pulled in a 40-yard touchdown. Eagles quarterback Lars Nootbaar completed 20 of 40 passes for 198 yards and a score, a 15-yard strike to Jaime Stewart in the second quarter, the Eagles’ only score of the game.

South Torrance 21, Lawndale 0

The Spartans (4-4, 1-2) kept their slim playoff hopes alive as they shut out the Cardinals (3-5, 0-3), keeping them winless in the Pioneer League Friday night at Lawndale High’s Cardinal Field.

Ryan Bowman accounted for the entire scoring for the Spartans, rushing for a career high 206 yards on 27 carries. Bowman scored twice from two yards out in the first half and scored a third time in the second.

Torrance 21, Compton Centennial 12

The Tartars (4-4, 2-1) moved into a tie for second place with El Segundo after they knocked off the Apaches (2-6, 1-2) Friday night at Torrance High’s Zamperini Stadium.

The Tartars overcame a 6-0 deficit to the Apaches at halftime and led 14-6 when the Apaches closed the gap to 14-12 on an 80-yard pass to Marquis Lewis from Jeremy Gaskin. Johnathon Heard sealed the victory on a one-yard run with less than two minutes left in the game.
