Matadors Spoil Alhambra’s Homecoming

By Rich Whittington
(Alhambra) – The San Gabriel Matadors scored a late touchdown to spoil Alhambra’s homecoming and beat the Moors 15-9 Friday night at Moor Field in an Almont League battle.
The Matadors (2-3 in league) entered the contest with a slight chance of making the playoffs. The Moors, which also finished the league season with a 2-3 record, actually controlled their own destiny entering tonight’s contest. They could secure a playoff spot with a victory, while a loss would almost certainly end their season.
The Moors scored first. With 4:36 remaining in the first quarter, Quarterback Armando Amaya called his own number, and scored on a 3 yard TD run. The PAT attempt sailed wide right. This gave the Moors a 6-0 lead, which they would take into the locker room at halftime.
San Gabriel got on the board in the third quarter. With 2:33 remaining, Running Back Joseph Mayorga scored on a 5 yard touchdown run. The Pat attempt was good, Giving San Gabriel the lead, 7-6, as the third quarter came to a close.
The Moors regained the lead in the fourth quarter. With 8:03 remaining in the contest, Jessie Campos added a 29 yard field goal, giving Alhambra the lead, 9-7. Then the Matadors sealed the victory. With 5:49 remaining in regulation, quarterback Marqus Valenzuela hooked up with Mayorga on a 73 yard catch and run for a touchdown. The two point conversion attempt was good, giving San Gabriel the lead, and the victory.
At 2-3, it is unlikely that either of these teams will make the playoffs. However, some very “interesting” occurrences have been known to take place on bracket day. Stay tuned.
