San Dimas 42 Windward 0

San Dimas stayed grounded as they shut out Windward 42-0 to advance to the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section’s Mid-Valley Division Playoffs Friday night at San Dimas’ Saints Stadium.

The Saints (10-1)rarely went to the air in the win over the Wildcats (5-4), as Saints quarterback Josh Avila threw just two passes on five attempts for 30 yards in the game. Even the Saints defense got involved int he scoring, as Mitch Giles intercepted a ball on the Wildcats’ 45 and returned it for the first score of the night.

The Saints got scores from three players on the ground. Denzel Mitchell carried the ball only three times, but scored twice as he rushed for 91 yards. Mitchell scores came in back to back possessions, as Miitchell opened the second with a 25-yard rushing score then midway through the second, broke through the Wildcats’ defense and ran off a 53-yard score, putting the Saints up 21-0 at the half.

In the third quarter, Andrew Espinoza emulated his teammate with two scores in the quarter. He scored on the Saints’ first drive of the half and hit the end zone on a one-yard run. He would do it again, this time with about two minutes left in the quarter on a 35-yard score, putting the Saints up 35-0. The Saints would close out the scoring with a 22-yard rush by Tyler Nance, with about nine minutes left in the game.

The Saints will return to the San Dimas Sports Park on Friday to host their quarterfinal match against San Marino. The Titans advanced with a 42-7 win over the Schurr Spartans Friday night at San Marino’s Titan Stadium.
