Bishop Diego 43 South Torrance 9

Despite being on the road due to sanctions by the CIF Southern Section, Bishop Diego needed little motivation as the top seed in the CIF Southern Section’s Northwest Division playoffs easily advanced to the quarterfinals with a 43-9 victory over South Torrance Friday night at South Torrance’s Spartan Stadium.

The Cardinals (11-0) looked at first to be slightly off early on as a fumble inside Spartan (4-7) territory was recovered by South’s Wasay Shahid on the Spartan’s 40-yard line. Six plays later the Spartans took a 3-0 lead on Nick Campbell’s 29-yard field goal. It would be the Spartans’ only lead of the game.

The Cardinals would score the next 23 points in the half, including a 50-yard interception of Spartan quarterback Kyle Nesbit by B.J. Murillo late in the half. The Spartans would make one more score, in the third quarter. This time, Nesbit ran the ball in from three yards out, but the Spartans got no closer.

The Cardinals will go on the road once again, this time heading to Village Christian on Friday night. The Crusaders eliminated the Bishop Montgomery Knights 38-21 at Bishop Montgomery’s Knights’ Field.
